Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

February 2017

all times PST

February! We’re ripping through this year. Are you writing as fast? Do it. There’s a lot going on, and a lot to say. We start with the Moon at the start of the Zodiac, in Aries. It’s a Wednesday, Mercury’s day of the week, so we can craft a month of sharp, fiery wit, if we so choose.

Wed Feb 01 the Moon is in Aries all day. Mercury is sextile Chiron. Don’t be afraid to write about what hurts. Don’t be afraid at all. You don’t have to show it to anyone.

Thu Feb 02 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Be bold and surprise yourself. Look at something from a radically different angle. A few hours later Mercury squares Jupiter. If you think you’ve gone overboard, so what? That’s what editing is all about.

Fri Feb 03 the Moon is in Taurus when Venus leaves Pisces and enters Aries. Aesthetics gets brighter, bolder, sharper, and more realistic. Note that this is Venus’s day of the week, too.

Sat Feb 04 the Moon enters Gemini at 8:44 pm. Heads Up for mercurial activities and greater productivity of all kinds. Don’t waste a minute. Read, write, talk, listen, and network.

Sun Feb 05 the Moon is in Gemini when Jupiter turns stationary retrograde in Libra. This buys us more time to work on relationships, like with agents, writing partners and groups, publishers, you get the idea.

Mon Feb 06 the Moon leaves Gemini at 11:03 pm and enters Cancer. It may have been mostly the weekend, but did you get much done? Did you accumulate more research material? Did you eavesdrop enough? (How is that ever possible for a writer?)

Tue Feb 07 the Moon is in Cancer when Mercury leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius. Thoughts and thought processes may widen in scope and become sharper. The little things can be the big things, and big things little. It’s in the nature of metaphor.

Wed Feb 08 the Moon is in Cancer all day. Do you work at home? Good. If not, do you work with dedication? Good. Remember, all day. A break for tea is permitted.

Fri Feb 10 we have the Full Moon at 22 Leo. It’s also a Lunar Eclipse. Heads Up. Acknowledge the nobility of what you do. You may be speaking for more than just yourself. Your audience is also much bigger than you realize. Make this your mission in the coming lunar month.

Wed Feb 15 the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Libra. Be lucky with writing partners and critique groups. We are having a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in cardinal signs. Start projects, Start some cleanup efforts that complete projects but don’t feel like completions. You know what they say in fiction: every good ending is a beginning.

Fri Feb 17 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. Be serious. If you can’t be serious, be sincere. Today is the last day that the Sun spends in the cool crisp air of Aquarius. Tomorrow the world may seem more murky and emotional. Heads Up.

Sat Feb 18 the Moon is still in Scorpio when the Sun changes signs, leaves Aquarius, and enters Pisces. Heads Up. Feelings get deeper and emotional currents may develop rip tides. Love what you do, and do it with abandon. Sometimes no boundaries can work in your favor. About seven hours later the Moon enters Sagittarius. Don’t isolate yourself. Get out and see what the current mood is.

Mon Feb 20 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. You may not work fast, but you will work anyway. No number of distractions (and they may be several) will stop you.

Tue Feb 21 the Moon is in Capricorn when Mercury makes a trine with Jupiter. Ideas and plot complications fall out of the sky for you today. If you’re not outlining or plotting, take notes for later. You have to be grateful whenever it’s easy.

Wed Feb 22 the Moon is in Capricorn all day. At 1:03 am Mars squares Pluto. Heads Up. It’s a good day to write scenes rich in conflict, disagreement, and clashes of will of all kinds. Try to keep it on the page. At 11:34 am the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. Tighten the seatbelt on your writing chair and don’t let the world knock you sideways. Heads Up.

Thu Feb 23 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury makes a sextile with Saturn. A cool, well organized head prevails today and you can fix a lot of structural problems. It’s also not a bad day to copy edit or proofread.

Sat Feb 25 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury moves out of Aquarius and enters Pisces at 3:07 pm. Work diligently early in the day and be ahead of the game if the afternoon gets disorganized. At 4:24 pm the Moon enters Pisces. If you’re too easily distracted, take a break and walk away for a bit. At 4:36 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury in Pisces. Heads Up. It’s rarely possible to do or say everything that’s in your mind. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up for safety’s sake.

Sun Feb 26 we have the New Moon at 08 Pis. It’s also a Solar Eclipse. Heads Up! This eclipse is very close to Neptune, too, so the outside world may be more moody than usual. This is at 6:58 am. At 12:56 pm the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. A dream may try to make its way into the waking world. Make it a constructive dream. At 4:19 pm Mars conjoins Uranus in Aries. Restlessness and recklessness are a dangerous combination. Maybe put off that rewrite for a while. Heads Up.

Mon Feb 27 the Moon is in Pisces when Mars opposes Jupiter. Heads Up. It may not be a great day to do that editing and trimming the word count (although it’s almost always good to kill adverbs on sight). It’s a great day for rereading, though.

Tue Feb 28 the Moon is in Aries all day. The Moon conjoins Venus at 6:55 pm. If the work day was all business, the evening is great for a social escape. It’s Mardi Gras. Let the good times roll in a beautiful way!

It’s a short but serious month, with eclipses and a very active Mars. You can resist kneejerk reactions, impatient decisions, bad tempers, and unfounded anger by keeping your eye on your work. One good thing about Pisces is that it let’s the whole world in without you needing to open the door for it. You can write about anything, and perhaps you should give it a short try if you haven’t already.

There are rules and conventions in writing. The good news is, when you create a fictional world, you make the rules, too. If the outside real world gets unreasonable (like it usually is), you can still keep a grip on the world you are creating. Your characters, and your audience, are counting on you. Heads Up!!
