The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

June 2013

Welcome to June, when the sun cruises north to the Tropic, peaks, and turns around again. North or south hemispheres, it’s a month of solar extremes. May we turn it into a month of extreme productivity, pleasure, and satisfaction.

Sat June 01 the Moon is in Pisces, a sweet sensitive way to start the month. The Moon squares Jupiter in the afternoon. This can keep the sweetness under control. The Moon next squares Venus in the evening and then goes void of course. This can keep emotions and romantic notions from running rampant. Shortly before the day ends, the Moon enters Aries. Prepare for lively times ahead.

Sun June 02 the Moon is in Aries all day. Energy and social interactions may run high. Make an effort to be agreeable, and let characters in your fiction be disagreeable. In the evening, Venus changes signs, leaving Gemini and entering Cancer. The first degree of Cancer is a special degree of the zodiac, being the northernmost point of the ecliptic. In fact, Venus is “out of bounds,” having moved farther north than the Sun itself can. Out of bound planets may express themselves in exaggerated ways. Heads Up. (in fact, Venus has been out of bounds since May 27. And, Mercury is out of bounds now, too. Has your writing taken on any exaggerated or extreme qualities?) Two hours after Venus enters Cancer, the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Independent thought and feelings run high.

Mon June 03 the Moon is still in Aries. Mercury trines Neptune in the afternoon. Any aspect with Neptune can be magical, or simply hallucinatory. Given that it’s a trine, let’s give it a mild Heads Up. Six hours later Mercury trines Saturn. This could get things back under control, or just throw a damper on things. Five hours after this, the Moon sextiles Jupiter and goes void of course. Relax and be happy.

Wed June 05 the Moon is in Taurus all day. Buckle down and get something done. It may not be much, but it’ll be done. Look forward to a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in fixed signs. That should help with any focus problems (if it doesn’t merely cement in any feeling of frustrations). Maybe this deserves a mild month-long Heads Up.

Thu June 06 the Moon enters Gemini. We have from now till Sunday morning to indulge our creative communicative urges. Don’t wait. Gemini doesn’t like delay.

Fri June 07 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Early in the morning, the Moon conjuncts Mars. This might bring motivation, or a keener sense of dissatisfaction. Heads Up. But brace yourself, as this is the day before the New Moon. Heads Up again. Do what you can to meet the new moon without anger.

Sat June 08 we have the New Moon at 18 Gem. Make this a month to start something new, or to add freshness to something old. There’s no excuse to be bored with your own work this month. Two hours later Mercury squares Uranus. Don’t be tempted to argue with yourself, either. You know who wins those arguments.

Sun June 09 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Gemini and then goes void of course. These last few degrees of Gemini can be powerful. See what you can get out of them. Eight hours later the Moon enters its home, the sign of Cancer. Enjoy less running around and more things that you can do at home. This may be hard at first, as all that Gemini influence is going out with a bang.

Mon June 10 the Moon conjuncts Venus in the early hours. Translate this into pleasant contacts with others. If working on a romance novel, write that sweet reconciliation scene. Eleven hours later, in midafternoon, the Moon conjuncts Mercury. Thoughts may come furiously at the most peaceful quiet times. Take notes.

Wed June 12 the Moon is in Leo all day. Write big and bold. Wear the gold satin smoking jacket, or whatever the modern equivalent is these days.

Wed June 19 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio in the late morning. Being serious and taking your work seriously will not be a problem. An hour later the Sun conjuncts Jupiter in Gemini. That it happens on Mercury’s day of the week can make it an extra prolific day for writers. The Sun conjuncts Jupiter only once a year. This year it’s also the last day of the month that the Sun spends in Gemini. Tomorrow the world may seem slower, deeper, perhaps more mellow and moody. Given that this is the last day in Gemini, there could be even more of a flash bang of writing or communicating energy. Remember that the Moon is in Scorpio. Take this seriously. Heads Up in a good way.

Thu June 20 the Moon is void of course in Scorpio when Mercury conjuncts Venus in Cancer. Mercury and Venus are no longer out of bounds, just so you know, and thank goodness because this conjunction carries plenty of weight all on its own. Be passionate about your views and opinions, and dress up your zanier fond notions to make them more attractive and persuasive. Any charm won’t last long though, so work fast. Mercury likes fast. Two hours later, the Sun shifts signs, bids farewell to Gemini and moves into Cancer. For the next four weeks, the Sun will be a guest in the house of the Moon. Think comfy clothes, better food, maybe more visiting relatives or houseguests. Dwell on the patriotic and not on the political, at least a little bit of the time. It’s the summer solstice, the longest day in the north and the shortest night (not this stargazer’s favorite time of year), an opportunity to look at an ingress chart for a peek at the mood of the upcoming three months.

Sun Jun 23 we have the Full Moon at 02 Cap. The Sun is just about as far north in the sky as it can get, and the Moon is just about as far south. This is a serious full moon that never gets very high in the sky. Dedicate yourself to some practical, manageable project that you love, and then do it justice.

Tue June 25 the Moon is in Aquarius when Jupiter changes signs, leaving Gemini and entering Cancer. We now have Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and the Sun all in Cancer. This does not have to mean shyness, insecurity, and over-protectiveness. Resolve that all criticism has positive application and that it’s a small world and we’re all in this together. Today also deserves a major Head Up because tomorrow Mercury goes stationary retrograde. Safeguard all that important stuff you don’t want to misplace, get things written down and put where you can find them, look at the inflation of your car tires, don’t ignore the oil light if it comes on, is your computer on a power-surge protector? You know what you need to do.

Wed June 26 is a quirky day. The Moon is in Aquarius all day. Other people’s needs are important, but not more so than your own. The Sun trines Saturn in the very early hours. Wake up feeling calm, centered, and basically responsible. Four hours later, at 6:08 am PDT, Mercury goes stationary retrograde at 23 Can. At the very same moment, the Moon trines Mars and then goes void of course. How can this be a coincidence? Write as rashly as you please but think twice before speaking once. Four hours and forty minutes later (at 10:48 am PDT), the Sun trines Neptune. Any mistakes you’ve made will be hard to spot, and then possibly ignored or go unacknowledged. Heads Up.

Thu June 27 the Moon is in Pisces when Venus changes signs and enters golden glamorous Leo. Where the month started out sensitive with a tender understated beauty, it may be ending sensitive with a beauty sporting more bravado. Twenty minutes later, the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. Following yesterday’s Sun-Neptune trine, this could be more powerful than usual. It’s a day custom-made for big brilliant dreams. Write accordingly.

Summer is always a high-energy time. (So is winter, in a radically different way.) This year the abundant Cancerian energy is enriched by Jupiter being added to the mix. The Mercury retrograde gives us a breather and a chance to go back over some things that need a tune-up. In all, it’s a great month to emotionally dig into our own projects and make our work more our home, in a personal, internal sense. Nobody else will ever understand that, especially not family or friends. Maybe that’s why they never recognized themselves as characters in our fiction. Maybe that’s why we fiction writers keep sticking them there. Feel deep and strong, create deep and strong, be brilliant and don’t worry if your work shines now or later. It already shines as it pours from you, just as surely as the Sun pours itself through the thirty degrees of Cancer and emerges into its home, golden Leo.

Shine on! Heads up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

May 2013

Happy May Day! Whether you celebrate with May poles or with workers’ parades, it’s a holiday. High Spring! Flowers! Let’s all take a deep breath and be grateful that April is over. It might have been a rough ride, but it’s behind us now and a bright strong month lies ahead. We have work to do!

Wed May 01 begins with the Moon moving into Aquarius. An hour later, Venus changes signs and enters her home sign Taurus. This can be a month of strong clear thinking and deep appreciation of the good things in life. We are also getting a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in fixed signs. Dig in!

Fri May 03 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. This is always good for dreams, fantasies, and lush music, as well as romantic imaginings, all story material.

Sun May 05 the Moon is in Pisces when Mercury exactly opposes Saturn. Listen more than talk, read more that write, and leave the criticism to others if you can. Five hours later, the Moon makes a sextile to Venus and goes void of course till evening when the Moon moves into Aries. It’s hard to get more tender-hearted than this, until the Aries part. Be sensitive, then flame on for the work week.

Mon May 06 the Moon conjunct Uranus in Aries. Start the work week with a constructive, positive bang.

Tue May 07 the Moon is void of course in Aries when Mercury conjuncts Mars. Mars. In Taurus. How refreshing! It’s not all sweetness, light, and roses, though. It can be indecisiveness with stubbornness at every step and misstep. Continue anyway, knowing that what you write today may need heavy editing later.

Wed May 08 the Moon is in Taurus all day. Ration those desk-side treats, go for less or no sugar in the coffee, and write. It’s also the day before the New Moon, so Heads Up. Actually, this New Moon is also going to be a Solar Eclipse. Make that a double Heads Up! Compose yourself, keep calm and carry on with the writing. At the risk of self-contradiction, let me say Heads Down, too, and let the outside world do its stuff while I hide out and write in peace.

Thu May 09 is a celestially busy day. First, a very dark Moon conjuncts (occults, actually) Mars in Taurus. Some very deep personal pleasure may be what keeps you going. This is early in the day and it’s always good for striking a few sparks. Two hours later Venus changes signs and enters Gemini. You may desire to work on more beautiful projects than the world currently allows. Four hours after that, an even darker Moon conjuncts (and occults) Mercury in Taurus. Thoughts and attention may turn dark and profound. Five and a half hour later, at last, we get the New Moon and solar eclipse at 19Tau. Then, for better or worse, the Moon goes void of course. Happily, all this is happening on Jupiter’s day of the week, perhaps comforting and reminding us that we are not alone.

Fri May 10 in the late afternoon, the Moon enters Gemini, making a conjunction with Venus three hours later. It’s an auspicious start to the writerly hours from now till the wee small hours of Monday May 13. If you’re not writing, you can still gather information, observations, conversations, all those things that get processed into writing at the end.

Sat May 11 while the Moon is in Gemini, the Sun conjuncts Mercury in Taurus. Is it not the season for parties and social get-togethers of all kinds? There will be lots of people with lots of news and lots to say. Mentally take notes, and try to not eat and drink toooo much.

Sun May 12 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Taurus, then goes void of course. Look forward to a pleasant, maybe productive, low-stress end to the weekend. Start the work week full of energy.

Wed May 15 the Moon is void of course in Cancer when Mercury changes signs and goes home to Gemini. You may want to just sit quietly and listen to the birds sing. Mercury may consider this fun for a bit, but the Moon may find it inspiring. Two hours later, the Moon moves into Leo. If it’s been a lackluster, less than inspired and inspiring day, this can perk up things for you.

Sat May 18 the Moon is void of course in Leo when Mercury squares Neptune. Go for low-profile in public, as this combination easily makes for big misunderstandings (and spicy plot complications). Two hours later the Moon enters Virgo. This often cools things down. Twelve hours later, the Moon opposes Neptune. This means we have the Moon, Mercury, and Neptune in mutable signs, making a T-square that points to mutable fire, Sagittarius. Something you’ve submitted or said or posted could be published and/or seen soon. Heads Up. Be discreet (or at least deliberate) on Facebook, if nothing else. Monday and the start of the work week may tell the tale.

Sun May 19 has little of writerly or artistic interest going on, although the Moon is in Virgo (one of Mercury’s home signs). However, it’s also the last day of the year that the Sun spends in the sign of Taurus. Often the last degree of a sign can carry an extra punch, so be on guard to be kind to your tummy and not over-gluttonize. Tomorrow the world may seem brighter, faster, more chipper and chippier. Brace yourself and look forward to as much writerly activity as you can tolerate as the Sun prepares to spend the next month in Gemini. Heads Up.

Mon May 20 the Moon moves into Libra. That afternoon the Sun itself changes signs, leaving Taurus and entering Gemini. Heads Up for us for the coming month. This would be prime productive writing time if it weren’t also so darn invigorating and full of social interactions, field trips, cultural enrichments, and other people’s words. Go with the flow and make what magic you can.

Wed May 22 the Moon is void of course in Libra for the first half, then moves into Scorpio for the second half. You may not get more serious as the day progresses, but the world around you might.

Thu May 23 the Moon conjuncts Saturn retrograde in Scorpio. It’s also the day before the Full Moon, which is also a Lunar eclipse. Heads Up on the eclipse part. Don’t severely judge your work or yourself. Just keep working and give it time.

Fri May 24 the Moon is in Sagittarius when Mercury and Venus make an exact conjunction in Gemini. If you haven’t submitted or returned phone calls for a while, this is a good time. Four and a half hours later, we get the Full Moon and lunar eclipse at 04Sag. This is a lot of mutable energy. If you’re having trouble staying focused, at least you shouldn’t be bored. This could make for great social situations and opportunities, too. Just be safe, and don’t party all this energy away. If you’re feeling brave, maybe ask the universe for something to work on that’s bigger, grander, and of more universal appeal and usefulness. You don’t have to save the whole world at once, but your work might help some tiny corner of it. Every bit helps. This Sun in Gemini-Moon in Sagittarius Full Moon comes only once a year, after all.

Mon May 27 the Moon is in Capricorn when Mercury and Jupiter make an exact conjunction in Gemini. Even if you write profusely or find yourself running off at the mouth, it should mostly be work-oriented. Capricorn doesn’t like gratuitous anything. Seven hours later the Moon conjuncts (occults, actually, not that we can see it) Pluto in Capricorn. Stay calm and have a cup of tea.

Tue May 28 the Moon is in Aquarius when Venus makes an exact conjunction with Jupiter. Here are the two benefics, conjunct in Gemini. Yes, I know, it’s the day of the week belonging to Mars. So be proactive and do something great with it. Heads Up in a good, good way.

Wed May 29 the Moon is in Aquarius all day. We started the month with the Moon in Aquarius and now we’re getting the chance to tie up some mental loose ends, maybe return to something we started or resumed a few weeks ago.

Fri May 31 the Moon is in Pisces all day. In the wee small hours, Mercury changes signs and enters the Moon’s home, the sign of Cancer. This is a lot of the element water, and if you don’t tend to being weepy, you still may spend a lot of the day being more emotional than usual. About three hours later, the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. If you don’t normally remember your dreams, now you might. Not an hour after the Moon-Neptune conjunction, Mars changes signs and enters Gemini. This eventually can fire up your writing enthusiasm. All these things happen before the day has properly begun on the East Coast of the U.S. It may be a groggy day with a lot to think about, or it could be a day when thoughts coalesce out of some emotional mist. Perhaps it’s better to write than talk about it, except with a very select few folks, of course. (For some of us, it’s almost always better to write than to talk, anyway).

The month may seem like one colossal cosmic mixed bag but you can pull it all together and get more done of lasting value than you ever suspected. Just dig in and hammer away. That’s what it mostly comes down to, anyway. Have a well-anchored, powerful, productive month, plough on ahead and don’t look back. Heads Up!

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

  April 2013

Welcome to the flowery fantastic month of April. The way this year's going, it may still have some snow and rain, too.

Mon 01 Apr the Moon is void of course in Sagittarius most of the day. You may have a zillion plans in mind and people to call. Relax. You don't have to do everything instantly. The Sun makes a sextile to Jupiter, a nice touch for the start of month. Late that night, the Moon enters Capricorn. Serious attention to work kicks in tomorrow. Sleep while you can.

Tue 02 Apr the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Keep the intensity under control and you can be extremely productive.

Wed 03 Apr the Moon is in Capricorn all day. We do get a nice little Moon sextile Mercury aspect in the profoundly early hours, before the Moon goes void of course in Capricorn. We can work with that, though. Think intensity of feeling that can be expressed with a light touch.

Sat 06 Apr the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. This can be one dreamy weekend. Have fun but be safe. Can you feel the temperature of the universe rising? It's because tonight Venus conjuncts Mars. Heads Up. Go long on deep passionate appreciation and go short on anger and impatience.

Sun 07Apr the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Pisces. If there's a need for any 'kiss and make up" from yesterday, this aspect will not help. Say as little as possible and listen as much as you can.

Tue 09 Apr the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Surprise yourself, and try to keep surprise small and close to home. Also, it's the day before the New Moon. Automatic Heads Up. Today and tomorrow are not good days to take any unnecessary risks.

Wed 10 Apr we have the New Moon at 20Ari. Heads Up. This might be your big chance to launch some major project near and dear to your heart. Four hours later, the Moon conjuncts Mars in Aries. It may be hard to rein yourself in, so if wild horses are dragging you off somewhere, try have it be somewhere good. Three and a half hours after that, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Aries. This is a little sweeter and gentler, but don't totally trust your judgment or any self-criticism, since you'll likely just love everything that you're doing. Remember, Venus and Mars were conjunct just a few days ago. Yes, Venus moves that fast. We're getting another month of Wednesdays with the Moon mostly in cardinal signs. (A few hours later today when the Moon moves into Taurus is the only non-cardinal Wednesday time we get.)

Fri 12 Apr the Moon is in Taurus when Pluto goes stationary retrograde. Why am I even mentioning this? Some people think Pluto's not even a planet. Old habits die hard.

Sat 13 Apr the Moon enters Gemini. Heads up in the most writerly of ways. We have from now till late on Monday to make the most of our word count, our submissions, networking, and all the research we can squeeze in. Seven hours into this, Mercury changes signs, leaving Pisces and entering Aries. See if you find yourself writing, or at least talking, faster. (The signs Aries and Gemini are sextile to one another and it's not all that hard for an Aries spark to start a fire in Gemini. See what you can do with it.)

Sun 14 Apr the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Gemini. You may be working on something big, or you may be partying and networking (or eavesdropping and researching) in high gear. Of course, it's also a good day to read yourself into the ground.

Mon 15 Apr the Moon is in Gemini when Venus changes signs and enters Taurus. You may be more inclined to stop and smell the roses. Venus rules Taurus, by the way, and everybody might be wanting more beauty (and just plain old more of everything) in their lives. Write long and luscious. This evening the Moon enters Cancer. It's hard to get softer and deeper than this. Heads up for tomorrow, though, because this marshmallow could just get toasted.

Wed 17 Apr the Sun conjuncts Mars in Aries. This is a lot of heat and flame. Heads Up. It's a good day to lock yourself in your writing office, write the most inflammatory personal emotional outrageous stuff you can, and let the rest of the world go its own way until tomorrow, as much as the world will permit you. If you get a rejection or negative reply or exchange of any kind, take a deep breath, keep smiling, and keep all murderous thoughts to yourself, since this will all defuse itself and pass rapidly. Have a cup of tea. A hot cup of tea. Don't spill it.

Thu 18 Apr the Moon is in Leo most of the day. You may be compelled to show somebody some work before it's really ready. You know what you can share with whom. Before the day ends, the Moon makes a trine to Mercury. Apply this to sensible plans for tomorrow and don't hash over anything you did today. That's done. This is also the last day of the month that the Sun spends in the sign of Aries, and this could lend a slightly manic feel to your work. Tomorrow will be vibrant and bright in a totally different way. Relax and sleep well. You've earned it.

Fri 19 Apr the Moon is void of course in Leo when the Sun changes signs and moves into Taurus. The Sun and Moon are both in fixed signs, and people may be less willing to change their plans or their opinions. There could be a slight control-freak feeling to the day. Be happy that Taurus is ruled by gracious, seductive Venus.

Sat 20 Apr the Moon is still void of course in Leo when Mercury conjuncts Uranus. Wonky ideas may have a longer shelf-life today. Two hours later Mars changes signs and enters Taurus. This should slow things down some but don't expect a lot of mellowness. This can have a lot of 'work hard, play hard' energy, and that can create one of those weekend you need to recover from.

Tue 23 Apr the Moon is in Libra when Mercury makes a sextile to Jupiter. You should be able to listen better today, but you'll still have to pay attention to hear what's really being said. This makes a great character flaw or quality, by the way.

Wed 24 Apr the Moon is in Libra all day, though most of the time it's void of course. Take a breather and let yourself settle down into something pleasant that deserves a chunk of focused time and energy. (Venus rules Libra, too, so pleasantness counts.) Heads up for tomorrow, though.

Thu 25 Apr is the Full Moon at 05Sco. Scorpio full moons are always intense, so just stay calm and work on the small but crucial details, even it it's only grammar and punctuation. If that's too big, choose to work on only commas or breaking up run-on sentences. This full moon is also a lunar eclipse. Heads Up. Resolve to fix one basic flaw or eliminate one bad (or unproductive) habit this month. Four hours later the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. You can't do things too slowly or too carefully today. Be happy, after the mania and mad rush of the previous month.

Tue 30 Apr the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Isn't this pretty much how the month started? Given all that Scorpio and Saturn energy yesterday, today we're buttoning down of the last button left open from yesterday. Embrace the narrow focus, the intensity, and the dedication to perfection, even if it's only one small item. One by one, those small things add up. Don't be too hard on yourself, though. Be sane, reasonable, and forgiving, especially of yourself. Things aren't always this restrained.

It's a super high-energy month and we can get a lot of work done. We can also fritter away a lot of time, so pay attention day by day to where your time and energy are going. We're also up to our horns in passion, too, with the Venus Mars conjunction and also the Sun Mars conjunction. Go with constructive rather than destructive when you can, but we all know, sometimes you just have to pitch that manuscript into the fireplace, get a drink, and start afresh. Mar is also about having the courage to start afresh. You can't be a wimp and write (or do any art), but you already know that.

And so onward we go, into the spring and into a year that looks to be rampant in creativity. Grow and nurture your share! Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

March 2013

Here comes March comes howling in!

Fri 01 Mar the Moon enters Scorpio. Serious stuff, this, and good thing. We have serious work to do. That it's Venus's day of the week may grant us all a little grace throughout the month.

Sat 02 Mar the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. Be respectful and determine to have a pleasant time. Work and socialize with sincerity.

Mon 04 Mar the Moon is in Sagittarius when the Sun conjuncts Mercury retrograde. Get introspective in a big way, and think about publishing markets.

Wed 06 Mar the Moon is in Capricorn all day. Well, good, it's a work day. The Moon conjuncts Pluto. Make it intense work. It doesn't have to be for long. Nine hour later Mercury retrograde conjuncts Venus. Formulate some personal internal notion of beauty. Two and a half hours later, Mercury retrograde trines Saturn. You may not act on this instantly, but some practical smart work can come out of it later.

Sat 09 Mar the Moon is void of course in Aquarius when Mercury retrograde squares Jupiter. This could put a chill on being social, but warm up the independent work drive.

Sun 10 Mar the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. Dream time can be the best down time. About eight hour later the Moon conjuncts Mercury retrograde. Thoughts may come and go, never surfacing into the world. Take notes anyway. The big news is, it's the day before the New Moon. Heads Up. (Or, you may think that the real big news is, Daylight Savings Time begins.) Be your normal safe self and be conservative in any physical risk-taking.

Mon 11 Mar the Moon conjuncts Venus in Pisces. You could share that dream in your writing. Eight and a half hours or so later, is the New Moon at 21Pis. Dream big for everyone, even if it's mostly in the form of meditation (which is what most writing is). Just before midnight (if you're on the left coast of the US), Mars changes signs, escaping Pisces and entering its home sign of Aries. Maybe this rates a Heads Up. It may be hard to stay in bed as late tomorrow.

Tue 12 Mar the Moon conjuncts Mars in Aries. It's Mars's day of the week, too. Be busy, as much of your own choosing as you can manage. Thirteen and a half hours later the Moon conjuncts Uranus. Your own feelings may surprise you, and this can be a good thing for a writer. This is a hot and heavy day for the Moon. I say, Heads Up.

Wed 13 Mar the Moon is void of course in Aries just about all day. It's a do your own thing kind of day, even if it's just setting your own schedule. Deadlines still matter, of course, but they’re your deadlines after all. We are getting a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in cardinal signs. Even if we can't finish a whole lot, we should at least be able to start a few nice new projects.

Sat 16 Mar the Moon enters Gemini late in the evening. We have all of Sunday and Monday, and Tuesday morning to do those Geminian things. Don't let the Mercury retrograde get you down. It's ending, anyway. Can't you feel Mercury grinding to a halt, preparing to go stationary direct? Well, it is. Our prime editing time is running low. Heads Up.

Sun 17 Mar the Moon is in Mercury's home sign Gemini when Mercury at last goes stationary direct at 05Pis. Not quite six hours later, the Moon conjuncts Jupiter. Erin Go Bragh. (This doesn't mean you have to have a pint of Guinness for supper, but it doesn't mean you can't.)

Mon 18 Mar the Moon is in Gemini all day. Mercury is direct now, moving very slowly. Write as slowly or as rapidly as you please.

Tue 19 Mar the Moon is void of course in Gemini all morning, entering Cancer in the afternoon. It's also the last day of the month with the Sun in the sign of Pisces. Tomorrow the Sun enters Aries and begins a brand new zodiacal cycle. May we all see things with fresh eye, and with not too combustible an outlook. The mood of the whole world will different tomorrow. Heads Up.

Wed 20 Mar the Moon is in Cancer when the Sun enters Aries. Happy Vernal Equinox. Cast yourself an ingress chart for a peek at how the next three months may unfold around you. It's a first quarter moon, with the Moon in her own home. Family, home, and what you can do for it (as well as get from it) are perpetually fascinating topics to put into your work.

Thu 21 Mar the Moon is still void of course in Cancer when Venus leaves the sign Pisces and enters Aries. Beauty may become less dreamy and romantic, and more conspicuous and vivacious. Write accordingly. Not quite four hours later the Moon moves on into the bright fiery solar sign of Leo. It might be hard to sleep tonight.

Fri 22 Mar the Moon is in Leo when Mars conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Heads Up. Let me try that again. HEADS UP. These are two planets that get along perhaps a little too well together, and they're doing it in Mars's home sign Aries. This is a lot of fire. Plus, the Moon is in Leo. Did I mention that the Sun itself has just entered Aries and is with range of applying to this conjunction? We can do a lot of good with this. Just pay attention, buckle down and focus, and curb any temper and impatience. Drive nicely. Keep fingers out of electric sockets, and keep appliances out of water. Think and perform random acts of kindness. Uranus should appreciate random anythings.

Wed 27 Mar is the Full Moon at 06Lib. Spend some of the next month working on improving personal style, and being less shy about getting your work out into the world. Consider how you can better cooperate (without total compromise or cave-in) for the benefit of getting your work out into the world.

Thu 28 Mar the Moon is void of course in Libra when Mercury trines Saturn. If you work at less than break-neck speed, you will probably need less editing than usual. Seven hours later the Sun conjuncts Venus in Aries. You may be briefly blinded by your own vision, or light, but something good may still come of it. Six hours after that, Venus conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Something odd may appeal to you, a favorite new odd word, a lucky writing undergarment, something. And, an hour and a half later, the Sun conjuncts Uranus in Aries. The Sun, Venus, and Uranus. Today's the day to write the kinky romance sequence, the one with the happy ending. Heads Up.

Fri 29 Mar the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. It somehow seems fitting that after yesterday's fiery festival of conjunctions in Aries, we get a slam of frozen water with Scorpio and Saturn today. Heads Up. This could trigger a major mood swing. If this dampens the writing urge, take a short walk or do something else briefly to restore perspective and refocus the eyes. End this week sweetly and well.

First, I want to say something not only personal but grammatical. I'm aware that the prevalent verb form of the word 'conjunction' is the word 'conjoin'. Well, perhaps this is an Aries snit, but I really hate the sound of 'Venus conjoining Uranus' or that 'the Moon conjoins Mercury.' Sorry. Won't do it. My ear won't let me.

This is one hot month, and I'm not talking climate change. Mars and Uranus are extremely active, and doing most of it in Aries. Spring has not just sprung. It has sort of kind of exploded. Some years it does that. We're writers, though, and we're not timid. We may feel sometimes beaten down but we are never never down for the count. Take hold of that celestial spark, transform it into a flame, and then feed the flame with all the passion and creativity you can bring to bear. Be safe, be respectful, be gracious and helpful and, above all, be you. There is only one you in all of time and space. To try and be someone else is to rob the universe of the only you that there will ever be. This is part of what Aries is all about. Go for it! Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

February 2013

Welcome to short and sweet February. (It might be cold, too.) We start on the sweet Venus day of Friday with the Moon in Libra (one of the two signs ruled by Venus). Go for pleasantness and nice manners all month long. It can take you further than you suspect.

Fri Feb 01 is a busy day, with Mars changing signs, leaving Aquarius and entering Pisces. Some impatience may come with this, so keep that daily word count going and don’t get frustrated or grind to a halt. (This applies till Mars get into Aries, in mid March). Venus also changes signs, moving from Capricorn into Aquarius. The whole tone and attitude we take towards our work may brighten and lighten up. The overall atmosphere will still be serious.

Sat Feb 02 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. It’s Saturn’s day of the week, too. You don’t have to be serious and grim out in the world socially, though. A touch more seriousness, at the right time with the right person about the right subject, can earn respect. Just avoid, or ration, frivolity.

Mon Feb 04 the Moon is in Sagittarius when Mars exactly conjuncts Neptune. This is a magical combination. What you write today can not only shine but glow , glow in the dark, and maybe even pour light into a dark corner. Heads up, for good or ill.

Tue Feb 05 the Moon is still in Sagittarius when Mercury changes signs and enters Pisces. This could be good for writing plot complications where a character’s head and heart are in conflict. Don’t let it seep into the real world, if you can.

Wed Feb 06 the Moon enters hard-working Capricorn in the late morning. It’s your classic work day. In the afternoon, Mercury conjuncts Neptune. This could be writing magic, or at least inspiration for the intellect. We’re getting a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in a cardinal sign.

Thu Feb 07 the Moon conjuncts Pluto. Yet another day that feels serious. Heads up. The universe is giving us permission to not fritter away all our time and energy on silly stuff. It can feel really good to do a bit of serious work. It doesn’t matter how little. Do it, and feel accomplished, because you are.

Fri Feb 08 the Moon is void of course in Capricorn when Mercury conjuncts Mars. It’s a great day to write fight scenes and arguments. Sidestep such opportunities out in public if you can, though. It is a Venus day, so this might help people to play nicer. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up.

Sat Feb 09 the Moon conjuncts Venus in Aquarius. End of day is the New Moon at 21Aqu. Make this a month to resolve to do good, do good to others, and refrain from evil. Sappy sounding perhaps, but such an attitude can improve your work (and its promotion.)

Sun Feb 10 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. It’s the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake. Dreams for and about the future are appropriate, as are dreams of change and transformations. We really are not stuck in these same old skins.

Mon Feb 11 the Moon conjunct Mars in Pisces. Heads up. Feelings may be near the surface, with energy to do rash things with them. About four hours later the Moon conjuncts Mercury, yes, in Pisces. This may cloud thinking for a bit or make it easier to get into obscure poetry. That evening, with the Moon void of course in Pisces, Mercury sextiles Pluto. Now we could probably write some obscure poetry. Why not?

Tue Feb 12 the Moon is still void of course in Pisces when Mercury trines Saturn. It may be hard to settle down, but get a bit of work done, and save the partying for the evening. It’s Mardi Gras. Let the good times roll!

Wed Feb 13 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Work intently on your own stuff. Remember to not be too rude to anyone who interrupts.

Sun Feb 17 the Moon enters writer-friendly Gemini in the late afternoon. We have from now till the wee smalls of Wed Feb 20 to write our little hearts out. Today is also the last day we have of the Sun in the sign of Aquarius. Don’t be surprised if people (including yourself) seem a bit more cool and distant. Tomorrow the world may be more emotional, expansive, and touchy-feely.

Mon Feb 18 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Gemini. Eight whole minutes later, the Sun moves out of Aquarius and in the sign of Pisces. Write with emotion and skip the cute tricks. Five hours later Saturn goes stationary retrograde, yes, in Scorpio. How much Saturn in Scorpio can we take? (answer: as much as we get). Be self-critical, sure, but don’t spend the next five months hammering yourself.

Tue Feb 19 the Moon is in Gemini all day. It’s a Mars day, with energy and motivation. What are you doing with it?

Wed Feb 20 the Moon is in Cancer. Even if you don’t work at home, your thoughts may trend that way. Late that night, the Sun conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. Consider poetry, music, maybe a movie you’ve been saving to watch until now.

Fri Feb 22 the Moon enters Leo but there are no exact aspects going on. Why include this day? Because it’s the day before Mercury goes retrograde for the first time this year. It’s a long retrograde period, too, twenty-three days. Prepare well. Heads Up.

Sat Feb 23 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury goes retrograde at 19Pis. Brace yourself for an extra daily dose of cloudy thinking, crossed wires, and muddled communication. Starting with the Moon in Leo may help us grin and bear it, maybe even laugh at some of the worst of it. Slow down, remember the little stuff, and give yourself and others a second or third chance.

Mon Feb 25 is the Full Moon at 07Vir. This can help us remember the little stuff and perhaps be more helpful to others. When doing critiques, nitpick less and don’t dwell on the typos. Six hours later, Venus moves out of Aquarius and enters the sign of Pisces. You may feel the heart warming up and threatening to float away, and on the day of the romantic full Moon plus the Moon’s day of the week. This is great writing energy.

Tue Feb 26 the Moon is in Virgo when Mercury retrograde conjuncts Mars. Yes, we had a Mercury-Mars conjunction before, on Feb 08. With all this Mercury-Mars energy, we should be able to get something done. It’s a good day to edit something you forgot existed. Or, perhaps briefly revisit that story or novel that’s been hiding in the sock drawer. Even if you change nothing, it can refresh your memory. Having a good Mercury retrograde yet?

Wed Feb 27 the Moon is in Libra almost all day. Enjoy it, and be productive. Wear some favorite comfortable garment or jewelry while working. Luck is a real thing and the world doesn’t always need to know when you’re wearing your lucky writing underwear.

Thu Feb 28 the Moon is void of course in Libra when Venus conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. Neptune is said to be the higher vibration of Venus, so that makes this a great day for art, and I mean ART. Music, writing, all of it. Even if you’re working on the most mundane, dull, dry, or fizzy poppy stuff, fiction or non-fiction, there are still elements of art that string those words together, and you are the one who makes it happen. Reward yourself for a job well done, even if no one else in all time and space sees it. You still did it, and it’s yours.

It’s that kind of month, heavy and powerful but also deep and sweet. Everything may seem hopelessly twisted and knotted up, frustrated and frustrating, sort of like the two junk drawers in my desk. Still, I can lay hands on the scissors or tape when they’re needed. It’s a month of focus on the big things and still insistence on the little things being right. We can handle it. We’ve done it all before. It’s also a month of grim persistence and emotional vulnerability. It does not have to lead to madness. Think wild but not crazy. It’s a short month. Do something outrageously grand with it! There’s no one to stop you, but you. Heads up!

The Writer's Astrological Almanac

January 2013

Happy New Year!

We have the Moon in Virgo, giving us meticulous attention and appreciation for the small things as well as the big things in the coming month, and indeed in the whole year.

Jan 01 is a Tuesday, and the planet Mars brings us energy and motivation. Let's not just burn it away. Aspect-wise, it's a rich and complicated new year day, with the Moon opposed Neptune. Let this keep pointless fantasy under control without squelching your sources of inspiration. Two hour later the Moon trines Mercury, opening wide the channel to express yourself. The day ends with the Moon square Jupiter retrograde in Gemini. Big heads can resume normal size and the faucet gush of wordage can be set to an appropriate stream or trickle.

Wed Jan 02 the Moon is in Virgo all day. Consider some rest and recovery, and some good editing opportunities.

Thu Jan 03 the Moon is in Libra when Mercury exactly squares Uranus. The nutcase arguments, ideas and plot lines will appeal, but not for long.

Fri Jan 04 the Moon is in Libra when Mars exactly trines Jupiter. We can act (and work) in a big way, or on a big project. Two hours later the Moon trines Jupiter. People will be entertained if not fully appreciative. Eight minutes later the Moon trines Mars. Have fun in a safe and smart way. (It's grand trine in air. Think big and smart with as many people as you can.)

Sun Jan 06 the Moon is in Scorpio when Mercury conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. After excitable times, settle down and prepare for work tomorrow. In the late afternoon, the Moon sextiles Mercury, and ideas come more briskly. It's easy to be clever. Four minutes later the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. This can focus you on more serious issues. Be grateful.

Mon Jan 07 the Moon is still in Scorpio when Mars squares Saturn. Don't expect obstacles. Rather, be calm and dig into what's already been started. Procrastination won't work here.

Tue Jan 08 the Moon in Sagittarius sextiles Mars and then promptly goes void of course. Take advantage of any spurt of enthusiasm. Two hours later, Venus changes signs and enters much less glorious and much grittier Capricorn. You can still make your work as pretty as you please. You just recognize it more fully as work now.

Wed Jan 09 the Moon is void of course in Sagittarius all day. If you're looking for a day to massively spin your wheels, this may be it. Evening, Venus sextiles, Neptune, allowing us to relax and turn down the volume on the self-criticism. We're getting a month of the Moon flopping from mutable to cardinal signs. Get focused but enjoy the variety.

Thu Jan 10 the Moon conjuncts Venus in Capricorn. Something may be ready for that elegant finishing touch, that last perfectly placed comma. Eleven hours later, the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Heads Up in a mild way. Don't be tricked into getting nervous and unable to work. In a more strong way, Heads Up for tomorrow, the New Moon. Be practical and safe in all those little ways that count.

Fri Jan 11 in the early morning the Moon conjuncts Mercury. Some bright idea may come out of a dark corner and follow you through the day. Seven hours later is the first New Moon of the the year, at 21 Cap. Begin something with structure and "good bones" to it. It doesn't have to completed, perhaps not even in one lifetime. What is important is to start.

Sun Jan 13 The Moon conjuncts Mars in Aquarius. See what you can do for others as well as for yourself. It'll only energize you to do more of what you love (which I assume has something to do with writing and/or art).

Mon Jan 14 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. This the time to pay attention to your dreams, or at least calm down enough to relax, breathe, and remember that yes, you do have dreams. Listen to them.

Tue Jan 15 the Moon in Pisces sextiles Mercury in Capricorn. It may take a bit of effort, but you can draw up some great outlines, sketch some solutions to problems, and in general find ideas that will make your work better.

Wed Jan 16 the Moon is in Aries when Venus conjuncts Pluto. Put this electric, explosive, erotic energy into some project worthy of the drama and emotion. Don't use it gratuitously. Eleven minutes later, the Moon conjuncts Uranus. Now if this isn't the aspect that gives you total permission to do who knows what! Heads Up all day. It could be spirited, if not explosive. It could a fantastically creative day, too. I say, shut the door, crank up the music, put on the writing cap and go for it. More tea!

Fri Jan 18 the Moon is in Aries when the Sun conjuncts Mercury in Capricorn. You can really focus on yourself and what work matters most to you, though perhaps not for long. This is the last day of the month with the Sun in Capricorn and that this conjunction happens at the "tail end" of the sign could provide an extra Capricornian kick. The Moon moves on and enters Taurus in the evening, and is in Taurus when Venus changes signs and moves in to Aquarius. You may feel the aesthetic shift from gritty no-nonsense work ethic to something more broad and universally appealing. Tomorrow the Sun will be in Aquarius, too, and everything may feel different.

Sat Jan 19 the Moon is in Taurus when the Sun moves out of Capricorn and into Aquarius. This can be good for works intended to appeal to a wider and more genteel audience. Taurus and Aquarius are both fixed signs, so the Moon and Sun are giving us this month to really buckle down and grind on what we think matters most.

Mon Jan 21 the Moon enters Gemini in the early morning. It's a writer's window of opportunity to produce, or at least stockpile research for future production. In the evening, the Moon conjuncts Jupiter. Our efforts get an extra blessing with this. Jupiter is also moving very slowly (and therefore being even more powerful) as it prepares to station and go direct next week. This is a great Moon in Gemini period for us.

Tue Jan 22 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Mercury sextiles Uranus in the early early hours, so don't be surprised by any strange, mentally invigorating dreams. Drink tea and write.

Wed Jan 23 the Moon is void of course in Gemini for much of the day. Evening, the Moon shifts over to Cancer, so at least look forward to a good supper. Get a lot done in the meantime.

Fri Jan 25 the Moon is void of course in Cancer when the Sun exactly trines Jupiter. Feel good about what you've done. Heck, feel good about what you didn't do yet, too, or what you wisely decided didn't need doing. We are entitled to change our minds.

Sat Jan 26 is the Full Moon at 07 Leo. This is another major "feel good" situation. You may want to be with people, party, socialize, and spread your wings a little.

Wed Jan 30 the Moon is in Virgo when the planet Jupiter at long last goes stationary direct at 06 Gem. The good news is, we get to enjoy Jupiter in Gemini almost all over again. The other good news is, we end the month with the Moon in Virgo.

There are a lot of celestial plusses to this month, and we don't want to squander any of them. Time swiftly passes by and opportunities are lost. It's our reflections and writing that share and preserve if only for a short time the lessons and discoveries of what it means to be simply human. Who else is going to do this, if we don't? Who else is doing it? When you find them, recognize a kindred spirit and embrace, perhaps not physically, but perhaps so. It's not an easy world or time, but really, it never has been. We're made for stern stuff and times. Like, here and now. Accomplish as much as you can as brilliantly as you can. And smile. You're beautiful, and so is what you do. Have a dynamite year! Heads Up!

Of the twelve Houses, their Nature and Signification.

As before we have said there are twelve signs, and also twelve Houses of Heaven, so now we are come to relate the nature of these twelve Houses; the exact knowledge whereof is so requisite, that he who shall learn the nature of the Planets and Signs without exact judgment of the Houses, is like an impovident man, that furnisheth with variety of householdstuffe, having no place wherein to bestow them.

There is nothing appertaining to the life of man in this world, which in one way or other hath not relation to one of the twelve Houses of Heaven, and as the twelve signs are appropriate to the particular members of mans body; so also doe the twelve houses represent not onely the severall parts of man, but his actions, quality of life and living, and the curiosity and judgment of our Fore-fathers in Astrology, was such, as they have alotted to every house a particular signification, and so distinguished humane accidents throughout the twelve houses, as he that understands the Questions appertaining to each of them, shall not want sufficient grounds whereon to judge or give a rationall answer upon any contingent accident, and successe thereof.

Of the first House and its Signification.

The first house, which containeth all that part of Heaven from the line where the figure one standeth, until the figure two, where the second house beginneth.

It hath signification of the life of man, of the stature, colour, complexion, form and shape of him that propounds the Question, or is born; in Eclipses and great Conjunctions, and upon the Sun his annuall ingresse into Aries; it signifieth the common people, or generall State of that Kingdom where the Figure is erected.

And as it is the first house, it represents the head and face of man, so that if either Saturn, Mars or South Node be in this House, either at the time of the Question, or at the time of birth, you shall observe some blemish in the face, or in that member appropriate to the signe that then is upon the cusp of the house; as if Aries be in the Ascendant, the mark, mole, or scarre is without faile in the head or face; and if few degrees of the signe ascend, the mark is in the upper part of the head; if the middle of the sign be on the cusp, the mole, mark or scar is in the middle of the face, or neer it; if the later degrees ascend, the face is blemished neer the chin, towards the neck: This I have found true in hundreds of examples.

Of colors, it hath the White; that is, if a Planets be in this house that hath signification of white, the complexion of the Party is more pale, white and wan; or if you enquire after the colour of the cloathe of any man, if his significator be in the first house, and in a sign corresponding, the parties apparell is white or gray, or somewhat neer that colour, so also if the Question be for cattle, when their significators are found in this house, it denotes them to be of that colour or neer it: The house is Masculine.

The Cosignificators of this house are Aries and Saturn; for as this house is the first house, so is Aries the first signe, and Saturn the first of the Planets, and therefore when Saturn is but moderately well fortified, in this house, and in any benevolent aspect of Jupiter, Venus, Sun or Moon, it promiseth a good sober constitution of body, and usually long life: Mercury doth also joy in this house, because it represents the Head, and he the Tongue, Fancy and Memory: when he is well dignified and posited in this house, he produceth good Orators: it is called the Ascendant, because when the Sun commeth to the cusp of this house, he ascends, or then ariseth, and is visible in our Horizon.

Questions concerning the Second House.

From this house is required judgment concerning the estate or fortune of him that asks the question, or his Wealth or Poverty, of all removeable Goods, Money lent, of Profit or game, losse or damage; in suits of Law, it signifies a mans Friends or Assistants; in private Duels, the Querents second; in an Eclipse or Great Conjunction, the poverty or Wealth of the people; the Sun his entrance into Aries, it represents the Ammunition, Allies and Support the Common-wealth shall have; it imports their Magazines.

It represents in man the neck, and hinder parts of it towards the shoulders, of colours, the green.

So that if one make demand concerning any thing specified above in this house, you must look for signification from hence: It’s a feminine house and Succedant, called in some Latin Authors Anaphora.

It hath Cosignificators Jupiter and Taurus; for is Jupiter be placed in this house, or be Lord hereof, it’s an argument of an estate or fortune; Sun and Mars are never well placed in this house, either of them shew dispersion of substance, according to the capacity and quality of him that is either born or asks the questions.

                                                           The Third House.

Hath signification of Brethren, Sisters, Cozens and Kindred, Neighbours, small Journeys, or inland-Journeys, oft removing from one place to another, Epistles, Letters, Rumours, Messengers: It doth rule the Shoulders, Armes, Hands and Fingers.

Of Colours, it governeth the Red and Yellow, or Croceall, or Sorrell colour: It hath Cosignificators, of the Signe Gemini, of the Planet Mars; which is one reason why Mars in this house, unlesse joyned with Saturn is not very unfortunate, it is a Cadent house, and is the joy of the Moon; for if she be posited therein, especially in a moveable sing, it’s an argument of much travell, trotting and trudging, or of being seldom quiet: The house is Masculine.

                                                   The Fourth House.

Giveth Judgment of Fathers in generall & ever of his Father that enquires, or that is born; of Lands, Houses, Tenements, Inheritances, Tillage of the earth, Treasures hidden, the determination or end of any thing; Towns, Cities or Castles, besieged or not besieged; all ancient Dwellings, Gardens, Fields, Pastures, Orchards; the quality and nature of the grounds one purchaseth, whether Vineyards, Cornfielfd, &c. whether the ground be Woody, Stony or barren.

The Sign of the fourth denoteth the Town, the Lord thereof, the Governour: It ruleth the Brest, Lungs.

Of Colours, the Red: It’s Cosignificator is Cancer, and of Planets the Sun; we call it the Angle of the Earth, or Imum Coeli; it is feminine, and the North Angle: In Nativities or Questions, this fourth house represents Fathers, so doth the Sun by day and Saturn by night; yet if the Sun be herein placed, he is not ill, but rather shews the Father to be of a noble disposition, &c.

                                                   The Fifth House.

By this house we judge of Children, of Embassadours, of the state of a Woman with child, of Banquets, of Ale-houses, Tavernes, Playes, Messengers or Agents for Republick; of the wealth of the Father, the Ammunition of a Town beseiged; if the Woman with child shall bring forth male or female; of the health or sicknesse of his Son or Daughter that asks the Question.
It ruleth the Stomack, Liver, Heart, Sides and Back, and is masculine.

Of Colours, Black and White, or Honey—colour, and is a Succedant house; It’s Cosignificators are Leo and Venus, who doth joy in this house, in regard it’s the house of Pleasure, Delight and Merriment; it’s wholly unfortunate by Mars or Saturn, and they therein shew disobedient children and untoward.

                                                 The Sixth House.

It concerneth Men and Mid-servants, Gallislaves, Hogges, Sheep, Goats, Hares, Connies, all manner of lesser Cattle, and profit and losse got thereby; Sicknesse, it’s quality and cause, principall humour offending, curable or not curable, whether the disease be short or long; Day—labourers, Tenants, Farmers, Shepherds, Hogheards, Neatherds, Warriners; and it signifieth Unkles, or the Fathers Brothers and Sisters.

It ruleth the inferiour part of the Belly, and intestines even to The Arse: this house is a Feminine and Cadent house, unfortunate, as having no aspect to the Ascendant.

Of Colours, black colour, Mars rejoyceth in this house, but his Cosignificator is of the Signes Virgo, of Planets Mercury; we usually find that Mars and Venus in Conjunction in this house, are arguments of a good Physitian.

                                                 The Seventh House.

It giveth judgment of Marriage, and describes the person inquired after, whether it be Man or Woman, all manner of Love questions, our publique enemies; the Defendant in a Law—suit, in Warre the opposing party; all quarrels, Duels, Law—suits; in Astrology the Artist himself; in Physick the Physitian; Theeves and Thefts; the person stealing, whether Man or Woman, Wives, Sweetharts; their shape, description, condition, Nobly or ignobly born: in an Annuall ingresse, whether Warre or Peace may be expected: of Victory, who over-comes, and who worsted; Fugitives or run¬awayes; Banished and Out—lawed—men.

It hath cosignificator Libra and Moon, Saturn or Mars unfortunate herein, shew ill in Marriage.
Of Colour, a dark Blacke colour.

It ruleth the Haunches, and the Navill to the Buttocks; and is called the Angle of the West: and is Masculine.

                                                  The Eighth House.

The Estate of Men deceased, Death, its quality and nature; the Wills, Legacies and Testaments of Men deceased; Dowry of the Wife, Portion of the Maid, whether much or little, easie to be btained or with difficulty. In Duels it represents the Adversaries Second; in Lawsuits the Defendants friends. What kinde of Death a Man shall dye., it signifies fear and anguish of Minde. Who shall enjoy or be heir to the Deceased.

It rules the Privy-Parts. Of colours, the green and Black.

Of Signes it hath Scorpio for Cosignificator, and Saturn, the Hemoroids, the Stone, Strangury, Poysons, and Bladder are ruled by this house; and is a succedant House, and Feminine.

                                                        The Ninth House.

By this House we give judgment of Voyages or long journies beyond Seas of Religiousmen, or Clergy of any kinde, whether Bishops or inferiour Ministers; Dreams, Visions, forraign Countries, of Books, Learning, Church Livings, or Benef ices, Advowsions; of the kindred of ones Wife, & sic e contrario.

Of colours it hath the Green and White.

Of mans body it ruleth the Fundament, the Hippes and Thighes, Sagittarius and Jupiter are cosignificators of this House; for if Jupiter be herein placed, it naturally signifies a devout man in his Religion, or one modestly given; I have oft observed when the Dragons tayle, or Mars or Saturn have been infortunately placed in this House; the Querent hath either been little better then a Atheist or a desperate Sectarist: the Sun rejoyceth to be in this House, which is Masculine, and Cadent.

                                                  The Tenth House.

Commonly it personateth Kings, Princes, Dukes, Earles, Judges, prime Officers, Commanders in chief, whether in Armies or Towns; all sorts of Magistracy and Officers in Authority, Mothers, Honour, Preferment, Dignity, Office, Lawyers; the profession or Trade any one useth; it signifies Kingdoms, Empires, Dukedoms, Countries.

It hath of colours Red and White, and ruleth the knees and Hammes.

Its called the Medium coeli, or Mid-heaven, and is Feminine. Its cosignificators are Capricorn and Mars; either Jupiter or the Sun doe much Fortunate this House when they are posited therein, Saturn or South Node usually deny Honor, as to persons of quality, or but little esteem in the world to a vulgar person, not much joy in his Profession, Trade or Mystery, is a Mechanick.

                                                     The Eleventh House.

It doth naturally represent Friends and Friendship, Hope, Trust, Confidence, the Praise, or Dispraise of any one; the Fidelity or falsenesse of Friends; as to Kings it personates their Favourites, Councellours, Servants, their Associates or Allyes, their Money, Exchequer or Treasure; in Warre their Ammunition and Souldiery; it represents Courtiers, &c. in a Common—wealth governed by a few of the Nobles and Commons, it personates their assistance in Councell: as in London the tenth House represents the Lord Major; the eleventh the Common-councell; the Ascendant the generality of the Commoners of the said City.

Of members it ruleth the Legs to the Ancles. Of colours, it ruleth the Saffron or Yellow.

It hath of the Signs Aquarius, and Sun of the Planets, for cosignificators Jupiter doth especially rejoyce in this House; it’s a succedant House, and masculine, and in vertue is equivalent either to the seventh or fourth Houses.

                                                   The Twelfth House.

It hath signification of private Enemies, of Witches, great Cattle, as Horses, Oxen, Elephants, &c. Sorrow, Tribulation, Imprisonments, all manner of affliction, self—undoing, &c. and of such men as maliciously undermine their neighbours, or inform secretly against them.

It hath cosignificators Pisces and Venus; Saturn doth joy in that House, For naturally Saturn is Author of mischief; and it ruleth in Mans body the Feet.

In Colour it presents the Green.

Its a Cadent House, Feminine, and vulgarly sometimes called Cataphora, as all Cadent Houses may be. This is the true Character of the severall Houses, according to the Ptolomeian Doctrine, and the experience my self have had for some yeers: I must confesse the Arabians have made severall other divisions of the Houses, but I could never in my practise finde any verity in them, wherefore I say nothing of them."

December 2012

We start the last month of the year on a Saturday (Saturn's day) with the Moon at home in Cancer. It may be an emotionally rich (and emotionally charged) month, so protect your heart and try to be open-hearted with others. Feelings always rate high this time of year, given the holiday season and family involvements, without any extra help from the planets. Make it a deep, deep month!

Sun Dec 02 the Moon is in the final degrees, void of course, in Cancer when Jupiter exactly opposes the Sun. This means that Jupiter will be high in the sky at midnight, and that it will be at its brightest. Plus, Jupiter is situated in the midst of the beautiful stars of the constellation Taurus the Bull. Go out and look. Astrologically speaking, no matter how big and empowered you may feel, you should have some reserve of critical thinking to keep things under control and to make the most of this bright aspect. You may even be called on to be the focus of attention when you don't want or ask for it. Twelve minutes after the opposition is perfected, the Moon moves on and enters Leo. The glamour and grandstanding of the weekend may be approaching its peak.

Wed Dec 05 the Moon is in Virgo all day. We have a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in a mutable sign. Is that not appropriate for such a socially intense time of year? Don't let all your work time get eaten by social demands. There is a ton of inspiring socializing that you can write about later, though. Take notes, at least mental notes. Let Virgo help you stay disciplined today.

Mon Dec 10 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio early in the day. Be serious about the truly serious stuff and give everything else a light touch. Afternoon, Mercury changes signs, to leave Scorpio and enter the expansive generous sign of Sagittarius. Thoughts get bigger and brighter.

Tue Dec 11 the Moon is Scorpio when the planet Mercury squares the planet Neptune. Even uncomfortable dreams full of conflict can be full of inspiration. Ten minutes later, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Scorpio, then goes void of course. Venus in Scorpio can get a little kinky, but with Saturn around you won't have to get into a whole lot of trouble. Put those racy impulses and flashy comments into the hands and mouths of your characters. Eleven hours later, the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Sagittarius. Be content with the days' efforts. Perhaps have a chat and a drink with a writer friend.

Wed Dec 12 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. If you can't write, edit. Is something finished? Submit it! At least read. It's also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up. Make an extra effort to be safe and practical.

Thu Dec 13 is the New Moon at 21 Sag. Be grateful for the big things and big people in your life. Look in the mirror and say, 'Thank you for being me.' Mean it. Now share yourself with the world in a big way all lunar month long. Be gracious about it, though, and don't force yourself on anyone.

Fri Dec 14 the Moon is in Capricorn when Mercury trines Uranus. Uranus carries a bit of an extra kick, since it just turned stationary direct yesterday. Don't expect to feel much influence, though, unless Uranus is strongly placed in your own natal chart. Five minutes later the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. A lot of us usually feel this one. Luckily, it's all very early in the day, perhaps before some of us are even out of bed. This can still be a productive, creative day.

Sat Dec 15 the Moon conjuncts Mars in Capricorn. This can give you a lift and extra energy. Work and play may blur together. At night, Venus changes signs, moving out of Scorpio and into Sagittarius. Wherever you are, whomever you're with, be sure to smile. Venus is now a guest in Jupiter's house. Let the holiday spirit begin in earnest!

Mon Dec 17 the Moon is void of course in Aquarius when Mercury opposes Jupiter. This could be big constructive critical thinking, or big mischief, or both. Heads Up. Seven hours later the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. This will definitely not help with the critical thinking part of life. Dream responsibly.

Wed Dec 19 the Moon is in Pisces almost all day, going void of course in the evening. You can churn out a lot of crude but effective first draft today. You don't have show it anyone, either. Shortly before end of day (on the US west coast, anyway) the Moon enters Aries. If you can't sleep and are compelled to do a night owl shift of writing, why fight it?

Thu Dec 20 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Fresh ideas may just fall out of the sky into your head. It's also the last day of the Sun in Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius. Heads Up. This can sometimes be a high-energy, heady kind of day. A lot of people might be compelled to big actions and big feelings. Tomorrow the world may develop a deeper, more solid and understated nature.

Fri Dec 21 is the first day of the Sun in Capricorn. It's the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, giving us the shortest day and longest night of the year. Cast an ingress chart for your location to get a glimpse of what the next three months may be like for you. This year, 0 degrees Capricorn also coincides with the galactic center of the Milky Way, our home galaxy, or so people are saying. If you think the motion of the outer planets is slow, well, the precession of the stars is even slower. For the last several years, and for the next several, 0 degrees Capricorn will be be conjunct the galactic center. Oh, and the galactic center is not exactly a point in the sky but it occupies several minutes of arc, depending on what frequency you're looking. I am not going Mayan apocalypse with this; in fact I'm not even giving this a heads up. The Sun is now in Saturn-ruled Capricorn, and I have every expectation of the world still being here tomorrow. If nothing else, Saturn has staying power. Dig deep into new life and let the new cycle of the Sun begin! Shine on!

Mon Dec 24 the Moon enters Gemini at the very end of day. Look forward to a mentally and socially active Christmas eve, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. A ton of classic works have been written about this time of year. Consider writing one of your own. Regardless, it's the Moon's day of the week. Enjoy the people in your company.

Tue Dec 25 the Moon is in Gemini all day. The Moon conjuncts Jupiter late in the afternoon. It's a lucky, happy day that you can write about later. Don't eat or drink too much, especially if you're driving. Thirty-one minutes later, Mars moves out of Capricorn and enters the sign Aquarius. Robust Mars is still sort of on a Saturn tether (Saturn traditionally ruling Aquarius) but now there's maybe a touch of Uranus (the modern ruler of Aquarius) to give that Mars energy some outlet. Make it creative, fun, surprising, and positive. Yes, in addition to being a complicated sometimes baggage-laden major holiday, it's also an astrologically complex day. Merry Christmas!

Wed Dec 26 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Have a great Kwanzaa! Want more holidays? It's Boxing Day. Also St. Stephen's Day. I'm no doubt missing several more. You can still carve out some work time, if only to get a little privacy, peace, and quiet to recharge those writer/artist batteries.

Thu Dec 27 the Moon is in Gemini for the first half of the day, then enters its home sign Cancer. If you're a night owl writer like me, you might sleep through most of the morning. The Moon in Cancer can bring good food and and smells to the workplace, though. Go easy on yourself and do what you can. Let the year wind down naturally and go with the flow. If things are hectic and involved, you can navigate that, too. Just keep those emotions honest and under control and nobody's buttons will get pushed.

Mon Dec 31 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury changes signs and enters the sign of Capricorn. Here's the anchor that we want to take into the new year. If you're the sort to make resolutions for the new year, this is a gift. The universe is offering a clearer head and more practical thinking at this pivotal time. The Moon is also reminding us to love our work, ourselves, and the glory of life that every writer and artist is constantly exploring and celebrating.

We end the year with Saturn exerting its power over the Sun, Mercury, and also Mars (if you accept the traditional notion that Saturn rules Aquarius). Don't feel glum about this. Be grateful for the moderating influences made available to us. Saturn has staying power, remember? So do we. Saturn is the embodiment of "perseverance furthers.' No one can stop us from creating, no one but ourselves.

Be grateful for all the good that happened in the departing year (yes, there was some, no matter how it looks or feels at the moment) and be grateful for the incoming year and all its seen and unseen opportunities that have our names on them. These may be serious difficult times for many of us (can you say 'Saturn in Scorpio?') but writers and artists have a strong, serious backbone of conviction and commitment. All of us. Yes, you, too. Saturn sometimes bring irrational fear (especially combined with Neptune) but we can acknowledge that fear, call it by its true name, and plug on regardless. We are creators. That's what we do. We create. Then we perfect it. In the end, even Saturn respects us, if we respect our work. Face the uncertain future and call it by its true name, which is the Present.

And on we go! Have a marvelous, rich, and splendid coming year, one day at a time.

Heads Up!

Heads Up!

The Writer's Astrological Almanac

November 2012

Welcome to November, in an autumn when even the weather has been intense and weird. We have a great beginning, with Nov 1 being on Thursday (Jupiter's day of the week) and the Moon in writer/artist-friendly Gemini. Venus exactly opposes Uranus today. Don't let this turn you off from the experimental and unconventionally creative (is that redundant?) this month. Let it enhance your sensitivity to the new and fresh. Find the charm in what's radical, without getting swept away. The Moon also conjuncts Jupiter today. This can raise emotions and personal expectations, too. Make this a happy, productive day and take it forward with you all month long.

Fri Nov 02 the Moon is in Gemini all day, but void of course for all but the first few hours. You can accomplish a lot today anyway. Be sociable.

Mon Nov 05 gets a Heads Up. Tomorrow is the start of this year's last Mercury retrograde period. Mercury is already slowed down to almost nothing, preparing to station. Be methodical and think ahead. Put things away where they won't get lost or broken. Put your notes in order, maybe in a bound notebook. Charge the phone battery, be good to your computer. You know the drill. Don't be afraid, but heads up.

Tue Nov 06 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury stations at 04 Sag. This is a fair dose of fire to get us through the retrograde period, if we don't get lured into impatience or spontaneous disorganization. Heads Up. In the U.S., it's Election Day. If this applies to you, I say VOTE.

Wed Nov 07 the Moon is void of course in Leo most of the day, moving into Virgo in the evening. Work with enthusiasm and childish good cheer, and be happy about it when the day is over, no matter how things have gone. Have a pleasant if low-key night.

Sat Nov 10 the Moon moves into amenable Libra shortly after day's start. Enjoy people today. They're all potential characters in some story, and they are all protagonists in the stories that are their own lives. Before days end, Neptune goes stationary direct. It may become slightly easier to express your art, operative word 'slightly.'

Sun Nov 11 the Moon conjuncts Venus in Libra. Think charm, charming, and a pleasant social weekend.

Mon Nov 12 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. Respect boundaries and deadlines. It's also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up.

Tue Nov 13 we have the New Moon at 21 Scorpio. Be grateful for what keeps you honest, and start something with depth. It's the Kali Puja. Maybe you'd like to start something with a touch of darkness, too. How much more Heads Up do you want? But wait, there's more. It's also a solar eclipse. Heads Up. The outside world may seem a bit rockier than usual, but don't let that perturb your inside world work. This is giving us two very heavy Tuesdays in a row. (And remember, Tuesday is the day of the week belonging to Mars.) Before end of day, Mercury retrogrades out of Sagittarius and reenters Scorpio. More Scorpio! Thoughts may return to old problems or grievances. (Did someone ask for plot complication ideas? Well, here you are.) Heads Up.

Wed Nov 14 the Moon conjuncts Mercury retrograde at 29 Sco. Heads Up. This is intense if internal, and a writer/artist can do something fantastic with it. You may not want to instantly run out and show it to everyone (well, you might want to, but you also might know better.) Despite all of today's intensity, the Moon moves into mutable Sagittarius twenty minutes after that Mercury conjunction. The Wednesdays this month are finally settling down into having Moons in mutable signs. You don't have to let all this intensity and mutability drive you into feeling squirrely. Drink tea and write.

Fri Nov 16 the Moon conjuncts Mars in Sagittarius then goes void of course for almost an hour before entering Capricorn. Here's a short-lived burst of fire to liven up your weekend. The Moon next conjuncts Pluto in early Capricorn. Do something constructive today. Three hours later, Mars bids farewell to Sagittarius and joins Pluto in Capricorn. Even Mars can have a serious side. Can you sense a Mars-Pluto conjunction in our near future? Why wait. Let's say Heads Up now.

Sat Nov 17 the Moon is in Capricorn when the Sun conjuncts Mercury retrograde in late Scorpio. Can you sense the Sun preparing to shift signs? The last few degrees of any sign can be extra powerful, especially with the Sun present.

Tue Nov 20 the Moon conjuncts Neptune at 00 Pis. It's also the last day of having the Sun in Scorpio. You could learn some really useful (if not pain-free) lesson with this. Heads Up. If you need intensity to resolve something, you still have it today. It's not a bad day for celebrate with a private work bash. Tomorrow the world will feel radically looser and brighter. It may not be any calmer or quieter, though.

Wed Nov 21 the Moon will be in Pisces when the Sun changes signs, leaving Mars-ruled Scorpio (or if you prefer, Pluto-ruled Scorpio) and moves into the Jupiter-ruled sign of Sagittarius. Heads Up. Expect space and time to expand around you. Both Sagittarius and Pisces are mutable signs, so expect people and interruptions (even if they're pleasant ones). Midday, Venus also changes signs, leaving her homesign of Libra and moving into, yes, Scorpio. There is no escape, is there? But why would a writer want an escape from intensity?

Thu Nov 22 the Moon is void of course in Pisces when Venus trines Neptune in the very early morning. It's Thanksgiving Day in the US, and though not totally writerly, it is totally social and often family-oriented and thus the stuff of great future stories. Be grateful for everyone in your life. They give you so much, whether they intend to or not.

Fri Nov 23 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. This can add extra fire to an already creative situation. Keep things under control, though.

Mon Nov 26 the Moon is in Taurus when Mercury stations at 18 Sco and prepares to move direct again. Heads Up. A fair bit of serious thought can be given to some serious subjects, if you're not lazy or timid. Two and a half hours later, Venus conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. You can do something good with this. Yes, you can.

Tue Nov 27 the Moon is void of course in Taurus when Mars exactly conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Heads Up. This conjunction happens about every two years. You can do something great with this. Really. First, it's a Mars day of the week. Second, there's a ton of earth energy and it's easy and desirable to be practical. What is it with Tuesday this month, that they've been so heavy? On the up side, the Moon enters the sign of Gemini later in the day. Stay calm and together, and pour this energy into your work.

Wed Nov 28 is the Full Moon at 06 Gem. Heads Up. It's a writer's full moon. On a Wednesday. Heads Up in the happiest of ways. Plus, it's a lunar eclipse. If ever there was a time to look into the shadows of the heart and mind (and come out with something brilliant to share), this might be it. We also are given the Moon-Jupiter conjunction later in the day. Think lucky. Plus, the Sun is now in Sagittarius. Be happy in your work. Be happy every minute. Share it through your work.

Thu Nov 29 the Moon is void of course in Gemini all day. Write, write, write. At least read, read, read. The Moon won't enter Cancer until early morning tomorrow.

In a lot of ways, this is one hairy month. A zillion complicated aspects come and go between all the planets, resolving somewhat by the beginning of December. We also get slammed with a few powerful conjunctions...especially Venus-Saturn and Mars-Pluto. How could we forget the Mercury retrograde? Well, we can't. Oh, and a solar and a lunar eclipse. All this in one little 30-day month.

Don't let the intensity intimidate you. You are alive, creative, stimulated, motivated, and pretty darn intense by nature yourself. Every writer and artist has an intense side. This month, you may as well own it. Look out, World! Here you are! Heads Up!
