The Writer's Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

February 2012

Happy February!

Wed Feb 01 gives us the Moon moving into Gemini. We start the month off with a writing bash that lasts until Friday evening. Put on that extra sweater, socks, maybe turn up the heat, or cuddle closer to your laptop, and indulge your writing passion while the outside world does its chill winter thing (assuming you're in the northern hemisphere or not in the tropics, Hawaii or Key West or some other classic writer refuge). Also today, Venus exactly opposes Mars retrograde. Ah, Love on the tips of both horns. Perhaps paper (or bytes) are the best place to put passions today.

Thu Feb 02 the Moon trines Mercury, a nice touch to add when the Moon is already in Mercury's home sign of Gemini. Ideas should be in generous supply today. Take notes.

Fri Feb 03 the Moon is still in Gemini when Neptune finally leaves the sign of Aquarius and moves into Pisces. This is the modern home sign for Neptune (traditional astrologers still prefer Pisces being ruled by Jupiter). Regardless, if we can keep our illusions, addictions and fantasies in check, this has to be good for all things artistic and visionary. Neptune will experience a retrograde period later this year, but it will go direct again at 00Pis22. Neptune, say goodbye to Aquarius. To celebrate, blast some of your favorite music, or have a private film festival.

Tue Feb 07 the Moon is in Leo when the Sun conjuncts Mercury. Five hours later Saturn goes stationary retrograde in the last degree of Libra. This is a long slow Heads Up. This can stall progress with relationships, romantic or business. And, heck, it's the very middle of the Via Combusta. The only good thing I can think about this is, at least Saturn is answering to Venus, to the extent that Saturn listens to anything. Eight hours later, we get the Full Moon at 18Leo. Ask for something noble, grand, and worth sharing with the world. Fifty minutes later, the Moon opposes Mercury. Don't get hyper-self-critical but take this chance to look at your ideas with a fresh pair of eyes. Later that night, Venus changes signs, leaves Pisces and begins the zodiac again when she enters Aries. Something beautiful can be born anew or get a second chance.

Wed Feb 08 the Moon enters Virgo in the morning. Look forward to a focused day of work, with minimum excitement and psychodrama. We are getting a month of 5 Wednesdays with the Moon in mutable signs. The first and last Wednesdays, the Moon is in Gemini. Write about people, don't let them swamp you, and you should make some serious progress.

Thu Feb 09 the Moon is in Virgo all day. This is not quite as good as the Moon in Gemini, but it's not bad. Edit something you wrote yesterday. Venus conjuncts Uranus in early Aries today. Start something beautiful even if it's tiny, just for yourself. Evening, the Moon conjuncts Mars retrograde. Brainstorm.

Sun Feb 12 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in the end of Libra, then goes void of course. Remember to be nice and appreciate small kindnesses. Don't let self-criticism run rampant. You're doing fine. Now say it again.

Mon Feb 13 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. Get serious. This afternoon, Mercury changes signs and enters Pisces. Your thoughts may take a more philosophic bend. Before day's end, Mercury conjuncts Neptune. Write and create uncensored but think twice before saying something out loud.

Wed Feb 15 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. Be adventurous in your work.

Thu Feb 16 the Moon is still in Sagittarius when Mercury sextiles Jupiter. You can do lots of little favors, especially for writer friends, but don't get swept away with it.

Fri Feb 17 the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. It's also the last day of the month that the Sun spends in the sign of Aquarius. Heads Up. Stay pleasant and practical, and don't let anyone tell you that you haven't accomplished enough.

Sat Feb 18 the Moon is in Capricorn all day. The Sun trines Saturn today. Responsibility doesn't have to be a burden. Just do what you need to do. Later, the Sun leaves Aquarius and moves into the sign of Pisces. Heads Up. The world takes on a more ethereal, emotional quality. Give yourself, your work, and others, more slack for the next month.

Sun Feb 19 the Moon enters Aquarius. That night, the Sun conjuncts Neptune in the very first degree of Pisces. Heads Up. This could be one of the moodiest and frustrated-feeling days of the year. Socially, be cool and cheerful. Save all that quality angst for your plots and characters. This could be a very spiritual day, too. Do something soulful.

Mon Feb 20 the Moon is in Aquarius all day. The big deal is, tomorrow is the New Moon. Automatic Heads Up. Take care of your own stuff, and don't let yourself feel cut off from others.

Tue Feb 21 a very dark Moon conjuncts Neptune in the morning, then about three hours later we have the New Moon at 02Pis. We can find a way to stay practical and still express our feelings. Start something compassionate.

Wed Feb 22 the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Pisces. Writers need to analyze feelings as well as experience them. Keep your characters honest. Two hours later the Moon opposes Mars retrograde then goes void of course. This may be a day better suited to planning than to the execution of plans.

Thu Feb 23 the Moon is in Aries when Mercury opposes Mars retrograde. Rethink, reevaluate, and be happy at any changes or alterations you decide are wise to make. There's no need to get angry with yourself over anything.

Fri Feb 24 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Innovate, invent, dare to explore and experiment. Look forward to a wild weekend, then keep it as under control as you want and need.

Sat Feb 25 the Moon conjuncts Venus in Aries. See and create beauty in places and ways that you've never noticed before. Have charming conversations, then go home and write vibrant personal poetry.

Sun Feb 26 the Moon enters Taurus early in the day. That evening, the Moon conjuncts Jupiter. If the day is too slow-paced for you, go write an action scene or something with a big car wreck, then be happy the day is so slow and serene.

Tue Feb 28 the Moon enters Gemini in the evening. We have from now till early Friday morning March 02 to indulge, promote, and progress with our writing schemes. It's not a bad way to close out the month. Is there something you started this month that would be quick to finish? Go for it.

Wed Feb 29 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Yes, we are getting a leap day, a Wednesday no less, with the Moon in Gemini. Don't squander it. Do something special, out of the ordinary, and maybe something you've been saving for just such as day as this.

While this month has some rough stretches, there are plenty of powerful positives to get us through. The first week, both Jupiter and Saturn are in signs ruled by Venus. Mars may be retrograde and some things done now may need to be done over, but at least Mars in in Virgo, which is ruled by Mercury. We can be more careful and considerate, and perhaps a bit less manic. Resolve to keep on track, as slowly as you please. Jupiter in Taurus likes steadiness of effort, and certainly Pluto in Capricorn likes effort. Uranus in Aries likes effort, too. Be brave, resilient, cheerful, and confident. Do good things all month long. Heads Up!

A brilliant question, indeed. How do we know that this is not just a random event. Well, as Ptolemy sayeth, "Since, then prognotication by astronomical means is divided into two great principal parts, and since the first and more universal is that which relates to whole races, countries and cities, which is called general, and the second more specific has to do with individual men....because matters are swayed by greater and more powerful causes than are particular events And since weaker natures always yield to the stronger..." Ptolemy tells us we should always look to the greater charts, i.e., Ingresses, New Moons, and Eclipses, because as smaller beings we are subject to the country we live in. In addition, he tells us that each country has a natural sympathy. Ptolemy tells us that Italy responds to the fiery triangle of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and specifically to the sign Leo itself. Therefore in every spring chart, that we ever do for the country of Italy, we should make it a point to look specifically at the Sun, because He is the ruler of the sign Leo, and wherever the sign Leo is in the Spring Ingress chart will give us great clues as to what will happen in the coming year. Since we are talking about a Spring that took place some months back I am including here the illustration of the Spring Ingress set for Rome, the capital of Italy. I always use the capital, as that is the main city (except for USA, where I prefer New York <g>).
The first clue we have that there will be some event that has to do with travel and voyages (or religion) is that we see that the 9th house in Italy's Spring Chart, has Leo on the cusp. This is neither good nor bad. However, Lilly was very clear in that he said that we do not wish to have ruler of the 9th in the 4th house when we have travel charts, because he said that just as the 4th sector sits on the bottom of the circle, so too the 4th has to do with the bottom of the sea. Looking more closely, we can see the Sun placed right at the bottom of the chart, the 4th.... The Sun has to do with kings and rulers of countries. In shipping the Sun will be the natural ruler of captains, and presidents. The Sun placed in Aries is a place of enormous egocentricity. It is a sign of great masculinity (sign of Mars) and movement (cardinal fire). The chart appears to have leaders of the country with a dramatic flare, who think rather well of themselves (Sun in Exaltation), and conjunct Jupiter which can lead to their own demise (Sun in 4th), because not only is the Sun in the bottom of the chart, it is in opposition to the traditional planet with the ax, Saturn. The head of the country can make some rather erratic decisions, that can lead to accidents at sea (Sun ruler of the 9th) because as modern astrologers reading this, will notice, the Sun also sits on the bottom of the chart with Uranus! This planet is known for accidents! Like our ginzu knife sale, that's not all! The Moon was called by the ancients, the natural ruler of travel, because of her many changes. Notice the Moon is in the 10th house of head of state, and captains, and she is with the leaden Saturn.... all this does not spell well for journeys in the Italian national Spring chart. It also implies the leaders are going to lose their job, and not only did Captain Schettino lose his job, but so did former President Berlusconi!

Every ending is based upon a single beginning. The ancients were very careful to pay close attention to every little detail of birth, because they believed that the very first moment always contain the seeds of future. Traditional Eastern Astrologers believe that the omen even overrules what is in the chart!

When a ship is about to drop into the sea for the very first time, it is customary to break a bottle of champagne on the ship, for good luck. We do not know what time the Costa Concordia hit the water on that fateful day September 2nd, 2005, but those that view the video will notice, as the champagne bottle hits the side of the ship, it bounced off, altogether. Attentive listeners, can even hear the disappointed groan, of somebody who probably in his gut, knew it was not a good omen, because, alas, the bottle of champagne, did not break!

Nowhere can this idea be more profoundly send than in the initial launching of the Cost Concordia: INBEDVIDEO

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Wwn6-DlhiR0

So what happened in the last few hours of Friday the 13th of January, to bring this massive skyscraper of a ship to her side, on the tiny Giglio Island off the coast of Italy, leaving at least 5 dead? As of this writing, 17 people are still missing and many thousands of displaced vacationers stranded?

Astrologers know that this cruise ship's future, for better or worse, is fully encompassed within the very first splash the Costa Concordia made when starting out on this journey. Witnesses tell us she left the harbor of Citavechhio and headed out to sea at about 7:00 PM. Local time.

Insert CHART

As William Lilly has given us a great example of shipping rules <INSERT LINK TO SHIP AT SEA).

According to Lilly, the first house will be the ship and all who sail in her. Looking at the first house, we see that partying sign of Leo rises, we can assume that there was a festive and upbeat atmosphere on the ship, when it set sail. Such a playful feeling that some astute passengers were keen to notice that there were no safety drills as are the normal procedures. This casual attitude at launch is the first sign that those on board are in harm's way because their ruler, the Sun is placed in one of the weakest sector of the chart, the house of illness, known as the 6th house. In general, the Sun has to do with all things royal. And we could say that those onboard represented the crème de la crème of society, and is very descriptive of a ship filled with the upper echelon of society, dressed to the 'nines' and enjoying themselves to the fullest, but so placed completely in the dark as to the dangers that lurked just ahead. At about 9:15 pm, "we heard a crash. Glasses and plates fell down and we went out of the dining room and we were told it wasn't anything dangerous" according to Gert Hammer, 65 who, told The Associated Press she was eating her first course, an appetizer of cuttlefish, sauteed mushrooms and salad, on her first night aboard her first ever cruise, to its side. (link) Passengers were told it was but a minor electrical error, and like that Sun in the blind sixth, and kept 'in the dark' about what was really going on for another 45 minutes, until 10:00 pm, when power went off for good, when chaos erupted, with both passengers and crew were literally in the dark, while authorities contradicted one another.

Because the Sun is the natural representative of the top brass, this also suggests that management, specifically the captain, might have been rather weak. This is exacerbates by the square that the Sun is making to grim reaper of the planets, Saturn. In a sense, Saturn can be seen as a leaden weight, sort of a planetary albatross, in any journey, be it by air or sea. Wherever we see Saturn, on any trip, we are looking at potential trouble. Notice, in this map, Saturn sits almost at the bottom of the chart, dragging the ship downwards. Saturn is very strong, placed in the sign of blind justice, but placed in the 3rd house, of mental error. As the planetary owner of the Sun, clouds the judgment those at the helm.

If this were not enough, looking to the section denoting the captain, we see the very stubborn Taurus astride the cusp of the captain's house, the 10th. This makes the ever handsome and charming, Venus the captain's planetary emissary. Notice, Venus is in the house of others, the 7th, specifically with Neptune, the planet of illusion. Where we see Neptune, things are never as they seem. Where Neptune goes, drugs, and alcohol, all too often follow.

Heads Up!

The Writer's Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

January 2012

Happy New Year! Jupiter is no longer retrograde and few things shine brighter or higher in the sky than Jupiter. May this be a beautiful, benevolent year when we are happy to be good luck for each other. It also promises to be a very mercurial year, in that Mercury participates fully in the dance with all the planets. May we be prolific and widely appreciated for the good work we do.

Let's start at the beginning. The Moon is in Aries on Sunday, the Sun's day, January 01. Be willing to shine all year, even on days when enthusiasm sags. Heads Up in all good ways.

Mon Jan 02 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Taurus. Look for good luck to share with other people.

Wed Jan 04 the Moon is in Taurus all day. Love your work and make it gorgeous.

Thu Jan 05 the Moon enters Gemini and gives us from now till Saturday night to write with the best. Start the year strong and don't hold back.

Sat Jan 07, with the Moon still in Gemini, Mercury sextiles Saturn, Be a little more careful with your words, because they're powerful. Seven hours later Mercury then sextiles Neptune. Relax and be a bit more fanciful. These aspects carry extra punch because Mercury is in the final degrees of Sagittarius. Think big while you can. Midday, the Moon opposes Mercury, then goes void of course until the Moon enters Cancer an hour or so later. What you say and write and will be noticed. By end of day, Mercury leaves Sagittarius and enters the hardworking sign of Capricorn. Tomorrow things will sound more constrained and serious.

Sun Jan 08 the Moon is in its home sign Cancer when Mercury trines Jupiter. Be generous with your ideas. Five hours later Mercury squares Uranus. Be constructively self-critical and make some discoveries. Late that night comes the Full Moon at 18 Cancer. Make this a month to work on projects of meaning and substance.

Wed Man 11 the Moon is in Leo all day. Be proud of what you do, and enjoy the process.

Thu Jan 12 the Moon is in Virgo (Mercury's nocturnal homesign) when the Moon and Mercury trine one another. People may be able to help you out with some plot problem, if only by real-life example. Two hours later the Moon trines Pluto. If your day (or your work) lacked drama or depth, here it is. In the evening, the Sun trines Mars. Heads Up. Mars is in Virgo and is slowing down in preparation for going retrograde. Don't get confused; get systematic and observant. Heads Up.

Fri Jan 13 -- yes, Friday the 13th -- the Moon is in Virgo when Mercury conjuncts Pluto. Drama and depth are not going to intimate you today. A slow powerful Mars is in Virgo, on your mercurial side, so be strong. Heads Up anyway. Two hours later Venus conjuncts Neptune (in the final degrees of Aquarius). This can be a pleasant break, but don't float away on it. In the afternoon the Moon conjuncts Mars. Work along, if not in high gear then in some stronger lower gear. Late in the evening, Venus changes signs and moves into Pisces. There may be a lot of hard-nosed, pragmatic energy out in the world, but there are also a lot of soft hearts in hiding. Know your audience.

Mon Jan 16 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in the end of Libra. Heads Up. Be good to people, and let them be good to you.

Wed Jan 18 the Moon enters Sagittarius in the second half of the day. If you had an introverted morning, there's time to reach out and recover. Be energetic.

Thu Jan 19 the Moon is in Sagittarius when the Sun squares Saturn. Heads Up in a good way. Pause and think about if what you're doing is actually what you think you want to be doing. Saturn is in the final degree of Libra, right the heart of the Via Combusta. Saturn can be harsh enough without turning manipulative. Take the solid constructive qualities of Saturn and Libra, then pour some serious golden Sun on them. It's the last day of the month when the Sun is in Capricorn and is a guest in Saturn's house. The Sun and Saturn are in tight communication right now. See what you see. Heads Up.

Fri Jan 20 the Moon is still in generous expansive Sagittarius when the Sun changes signs and moves into Aquarius. Traditionally, Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, but it's nothing like Capricorn. Look for the world to be bigger, more inclusive, and perhaps less severe and demanding. This is no excuse for sloppiness, of course. Heads Up.

Sat Jan 21 the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Stay calm and have a peaceful weekend. That night, the Sun squares Jupiter. If you've been overdoing anything, this can moderate things and bring some remedy. It's also the day before the New Moon. Major Heads Up. Think safety, routine caution, and a little extra loving care.

Sun Jan 22 the Moon conjuncts Mercury in the last third (the third decanate) of Capricorn. Think dark serious thoughts if you must, or write them. Hey, it worked for Stephen King. Before end of day is the New Moon at 02 Aquarius. Dream big dreams and tomorrow begin something noble and bigger than yourself.

Mon Jan 23 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury trines Mars. Don't get impatient with yourself. Give yourself all the time you need to think things through and do them with full force, to completion. This evening Mars goes stationary retrograde at 23 Virgo. Heads Up. A lot of good work can be done with this placement. If you don't like Mars in Virgo, remember that Mars is now a guest in Mercury's house. Besides, you have from now till the middle of April to change your mind and see the good side. Heads Up. It's also the Chinese New Year, Year of the Dragon! Luck, Health, Love, and Joy!

Wed Jan 25 the Moon conjuncts Neptune and goes void of course for about forty minutes until entering Pisces. If you needed a dreamy Wednesday to do some dreamy writing, this may be it. The first two Wednesdays this month were in fixed signs, but that's slipped into these last two Wednesdays in mutable signs. Relax a bit, get a fresh cup of tea, maybe a cookie. Mind those crumbs on the keyboard. It's good to remember to be human, even at work.

Thu Jan 26 the Moon conjuncts Venus in Pisces in the morning. At night, the Moon opposes Mars, who is retrograde and hunched down in Virgo. Venus will be in Pisces for only twelve days before moving on into Aries. Aries, we all know, is ruled by Mars, who is camping out in Virgo. This can be the stuff of excellent frustrated romance, if that's your thing.

Fri Jan 27 the Moon is void of course in Pisces when Mercury squares Saturn. Don't be too harsh on yourself, your work, or on others. Take the kernels of truth as constructive criticism and this too shall pass. In nine short hours Mercury will be released from Saturn's domain of Capricorn and enter Aquarius to join the Sun in a more comfortable, less uncompromising environment. True, modern astrology gives Aquarius to be the home of Uranus, but really, aren't things wild enough already? Just my opinion right now, of course. Later in the day the Moon enters Aries and and conjuncts the rebellious Uranus. If you need more wildness, the sky is happy to oblige.

Sat Jan 28 the Moon is in Aries all day. Mercury sextiles Uranus in the late morning, an aspect that's always glad to provide wild and crazy ideas, and perhaps some good entertainment. In the evening, Mercury squares Jupiter. You could also be very entertaining by cheerfully catching your own minor blunders and displaying some of your charming modesty. Writers and artists wear many hats, do we not? And it's our sincerity that lets the world allow us to live. Heads Up.

Mon Jan 30 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Taurus. We end the month with the same lucky conjunction that started it.

Stay focused on what is working and be persistent. Be grateful for the Mars retrograde, exercise a bit more care in the physical realm, and avoid any silly needless accidents (which, really, are almost all of them). We do not have to run full throttle all the time, no matter the hype we hear. Somebody wrote that hype, didn't they?

Have a fantastic start to a grand year! Heads Up!

The Writer's Astrological Almanac

December 2011

Happy December. As the solar year wanes, the holiday season kicks in. Mercury is retrograde for the first two weeks, so social interactions may be a bit more scrambled than usual, but that can be considered part of the fun. Resolve to enjoy this month!

Thu Dec 01 we begin the month with the Moon conjuncting Neptune in the end of Aquarius, then going void of course. Dreams are rarely as strong as they are now. Two and a half hours later Venus exactly conjuncts Pluto. Keep the level of excitement under control, except perhaps in your works of fiction. An hour after this, the Moon enters the sign of Pisces. Sensitivity peaks, but remember, Mercury is retrograde so don't get maudlin.

Fri Dec 02 the Moon is in Pisces all day. In the very early morning, the Sun exactly squares Mars. Heads Up. You don't have to be impatient with yourself.

Sat Dec 03 the Moon enters Aries, and conjuncts Uranus an hour and twenty minutes later. The Moon will be in Aries until Tuesday morning, so feel independent and make time to work on some of your own stuff.

Sun Dec o4 the Moon is in Aries all day. The Sun conjuncts Mercury in the wee small hours. Your reasoning may not be right, but it's yours. In midafternoon, Mercury squares Mars. Heads Up. Nobody is going to win any arguments with the Mercury retrograde going on.

Mon Dec 05 the Moon is still in Aries. In the morning, Venus exactly trines Mars. Inject a bit of kindness into your routine. or at least into your tone of voice.

Tue Dec 06 the Moon enters Taurus, and two hours later conjuncts Jupiter. Make this a lucky day and make your work elegant if not perfect.

Wed Dec 07 the Moon is in Taurus all day. Three out of four Wednesdays see the Moon in a fixed sign. Perservere and don't be deterred in making progress.

Thu Dec 08 the Moon enters Gemini in the evening. From now until Sunday morning we can be the best and most manic of writers and communicators. Heads Up. Stay focused and don't distract yourself or cause any more confusion than necessary.

Fri Dec 09 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Near the end of day, Uranus goes stationary direct. This has slight impact compared to the Mercury retrograde and the coming full moon tomorrow, which is a lunar eclipse. Another eclipse! Heads Up. Embrace change but don't instigate any unnecessarily.

Sat Dec 10 is the Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse at 18 Gemini. Heads Up. Is this not custom-made to be put into writing? Be brilliant but succinct, wildly popular but not didactic, compassionate but not blinded by emotions.

Tue Dec 13 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury goes stationary direct. Heads Up. Make use of this strong, slow, no longer backward-moving Mercury to precisely articulate your passion.

Wed Dec 14 the Moon is in Leo all day. What I said about precisely articulating passion.

Fri Dec 16 the Moon is in Virgo all day. In the very early hours, the Moon exactly squares Mercury. Question verbal sloppiness and emotional overreaction. Four and a half hours later, the Moon exactly trines Pluto. You can express the most radical ideas and stay out of trouble if you're careful. Before day's end, the Moon conjuncts Mars, always a high-energy event. In a holiday-laden month, this can be a super-busy social weekend. Heads Up. It's Beethoven's birthday. Listen to the second movement of his Symphony #7, or the Ode to Joy (if you must).

Sun Dec 18 the Moon is in Libra when Venus exactly squares Saturn. Extravagance may come under fresh scrutiny, which does not have to be a bad thing.

Mon Dec 19 the Moon is in Libra for this Saturn-rich day. In the morning, the Sun sextiles Saturn. You can gently pitch some new (or old) project with extra expertise and authority. That night, the Moon conjuncts Saturn. What you do today can have deep roots and staying power. Do non-frivolous things, and enjoy. Remember, you'll get the results you deserve.

Tue Dec 20 the Moon is in Scorpio when Venus changes signs and enters Aquarius. Be serious about your work and don't be distracted by what only looks like something bigger and more urgent. That evening, Venus exactly squares Jupiter. Don't go overboard with trying to do too much for too many people. It's also the last day for the Sun to be in Sagittarius. Heads Up. Take a deep breath, enjoy being you, and exhale into a more focused, better defined version of yourself.

Wed Dec 21 the Moon is in Scorpio when the Sun changes signs and enters Capricorn. Heads Up. Seriousness is good but if it's overdone, it's grim. Don't go there. It's the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere, the longest night and the shortest day. For a peek at the coming three months, cast yourself an Ingress Chart. It's also Hanukkah. Be grateful for those miraculous good things that are so easy to overlook. This includes having meaningful work. You get to define 'meaningful.'

Thu Dec 22 the Moon is in Sagittarius when the Sun exactly trines Jupiter in the morning. You have more talent and good qualities than you realize. In the afternoon, the Sun exactly squares Uranus. You do not have to cause trouble for yourself. Stay focused. In the evening, the Moon conjuncts Mercury. It's a good night to listen more than talk. After all, some writers are notorious eavesdroppers and heavens knows, people have a lot to say.

Fri Dec 23 the Moon is in Sagittarius when it exactly squares Mars. Being too outgoing or self-promoting isn't going to further any of your dreams. Considering that tomorrow is the New Moon, Heads Up. Avoid disagreements as much as possible, be safe and enjoy a smooth holiday.

Sat Dec 24 we have the New Moon at 02Cap. Begin something substantial and solid. Almost eight hours later, the Moon conjuncts Pluto. Be as intense as you please, for a short time.

Sun Dec 25 the Moon is in Capricorn when Jupiter goes stationary direct. Yes, Jupiter has been retrograde since the end of August, and it's finally ending. Luck and extravagance can conspicuously reenter the world. Heads Up, and be happy this is in Capricorn, because when a world is starved for something, it's too easy to get carried away. It's also Christmas. There is certainly a lot to be grateful for and to celebrate. For starters, celebrate that inner child that every writer and artist must constantly nourish.

Mon Dec 26 the Moon enters Aquarius in the morning, and conjuncts Venus in Aquarius that night. Think cool, congenial, and many people. Happy holidays!

Wed Dec 28 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Aquarius, then goes void of course. We saw this at the beginning of the month, didn't we? True dreams are not going to die. Late that night, the Sun conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Heads Up. Mark this as one intense day and pour it into your work. The Moon moves into Pisces late in the day, so protect your heart.

Sat Dec 31 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. This is the last day of the calendar year and each of us will say goodbye in our own way. Late that night, Mercury squares Mars. Take this Heads Up into the coming year and inprove all your communications and writings with better, more persuasive, and less belligerent skills. It's New Years Eve. If you're not inclined to be loaded down with resolutions, consider shedding something that you don't want or need in the coming year.

Like most Decembers, this month is fraught with danger, energy, passions, pressures, and people, people, and more people. How can anybody expect to get any work done under these conditions? Well, that's where focus comes into play. When you're steeped in doing something that you love, the world has a hard time competing for your attention. Do what you love, and love what you do, and look forward to a year of exactly that. We're each of us talented, inspired, driven, compassionate, sensitive, insightful, creative, playful, even joyful. What, you don't recognize yourself in that description? Well you are! Don't forget it! Have a spectacular month and an outstanding coming year! It's yours, all yours, for the taking and for the giving!

Happy New Year! Heads Up!!

The Writer's Astrological Almanac

November 2011

Happy November! Autumn and the closing of the year is upon us with its usual vengeance.

We start on a Tuesday (the day of the week ruled by Mars) with the Moon void of course in Capricorn. It's easy to work hard on something already started. In the wee small hours Mercury exactly squares Neptune. You may dream dissatisfaction, but on waking things will be fine. Before dawn, the Moon enters Aquarius. Enjoy a focused day.

Wed Nov 02 the Moon is in Aquarius all day. Work with a clear mind. In the early hours, Venus changes signs and enters the expansive and uplifting sign of Sagittarius. This will lighten anyone's mood. Eight hours later, in the late morning, Mercury leaves Scorpio behind to enter Sagittarius. You can be serious in a bigger, less brutal way.

Thu Nov 03 the Moon is in Aquarius when Venus trines Uranus in the wee smalls. Dabble with some small quaint experiment. Six hours later Mercury trines Uranus. Dabble more cleverly. As Mercury and Venus slowly perfect their conjunction, we'll see these mirrored aspects get closer together in time. That night, the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Aquarius, then goes void of course. Dream your to-do list for tomorrow.

Fri Nov 04 the Moon enters Pisces. Five hours later, the Moon squares Mercury, and thirty-one minutes later, the Moon squares Venus. Note that it happens to Mercury first, as Mercury is still catching up with Venus. The gap is closing fast, though. Emotions may be near the surface. Write something romantic.

Sun Nov 06 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Surprise yourself with an abnormally busy weekend.

Mon Nov 07 the Moon is in Aries when Mars exactly opposes Neptune. Write with extra deliberation because you can make unusually strong impressions today.

Tue Nov 08 the Moon is in Aries when what to me is a profound non-event happens. Mercury and Venus are with 3 minutes of arc of an exact conjunction at 07 Sag when Mercury slows down and begins to fall behind. From now on, Mercury will fall progressively farther behind. Mercury won't be stationary retrograde for fifteen days, but today we can see the planet slow down in its pursuit to catch up with Venus. It's not going to happen this year. Heads Up to us all. Enjoy the prolonged sweetness of Mercury and Venus in Sagittarius but don't expect perfection. This is also the day when the Sun advances to 16 Scorpio and escapes from the Fiery Road. The Via Combusta is behind us. Look forward to a less severe general atmosphere.

Wed Nov 09 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Taurus in the morning. Luxuriate in the creation process. Early afternoon, Neptune goes stationary direct. Imaginations may become slightly more active.

Thu Nov 10 is the Full Moon at 18 Taurus. Work towards something beautiful, no matter how material. In the evening, Mars changes signs and enters Virgo. This can further help us focus on making the details of things more beautiful.

Fri Nov 11 the Moon enters Gemini. Enjoy from now until Sunday evening all those marvelous mercurial pursuits, including writing.

Sat Nov 12 the Moon is in Gemini when it exactly opposes ruler Mercury in Sagittarius. Are you working on the right project, or just hiding in the trivial? Fifty minutes later, the Moon opposes Venus. Relax; anything can be improved.

Wed Nov 16 the Moon is in Leo when Mars exactly trines Jupiter. It's not often that so much energy can be applied to self-control and truly mastering something.

Thu Nov 17 the Moon is still in Leo when it trines Mercury, and four hours later trines Venus. This is a lot of fire; write fast and furious then fix later.

Fri Nov 18 the Moon conjuncts Mars in Virgo. Don't waste time or energy being embarrassed by first drafts. Be grateful for the first draft in hand and charge on!

Sat Nov 19 the Moon is in Virgo when it exactly squares Mercury. No criticism or self-criticism is going to distract you today.

Sun Nov 20 the Moon is still in Virgo when it squares Venus in the very early morning. Think more about substance and less about appearance. This follows the square to Mercury by more than six hours.

Mon Nov 21 the Moon is in Libra all day. Today is the last full day that the Sun spends in Scorpio. Tomorrow the world will be much bigger and brighter. Heads Up.

Tue Nov 22 the Moon is in Libra when the Sun changes signs and enters Sagittarius. Look on the world with more generous eyes. About two hours later, the Moon conjuncts Saturn. Heads Up. Respect and seriousness are always appreciated when the Moon conjuncts Saturn. And, tomorrow Mercury will station and go retrograde. Major Heads Up. Take your traditional precautions and look forward to a few weeks of scrambled plans, communications, and mechanical mischief.

Wed Nov 23 the Moon is in Scorpio when Mars exactly trines Pluto. Heads Up. Don't be too ready and eager to make the wrong change. Late that night, Mercury stations and goes retrograde. You know, maybe Mercury retrograde is a good time to write steampunk and monsters run amok stories. Heads Up. Also, if that's not enough, tomorrow is the New Moon (and solar eclipse). Heads Up!! Don't get timid, but stay cautious.

Thu Nov 24 we have the New Moon (and solar eclipse) at 02Sag. Begin something fresh, new, big, and generous and worthy of sharing with the world.

Sat Nov 26 the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Sagittarius. Have a glorious weekend but don't let it get blown out of control. Even writers can get exhausted. Two and a half hours later, Venus changes signs and enters Capricorn. This can slow down the social interactions. That evening, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Capricorn. Admire someone else's achievements.

Sun Nov 27 the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Get mentally organized for the coming week. In the afternoon, Venus exactly trines Jupiter. Enjoy everything you do, no matter how silly or slight.

Wed Nov 30 the Moon is in Aquarius all day. Be inventive. It keeps your mind fresh. In the early morning, the Moon sextiles Mercury retrograde. This can make mundane assignments easier if not fun.

It's a high energy and a highly emotional month. Inspiration and productivity are where you find them, and in November, inspiration and productivity are all over the place. Every place you look, everywhere you turn, you can find what you need plus some to keep the wheels turning and accomplish what you need to do. Have a fantastic month and position yourself well to jump into whatever comes next in the last month of the year. Heads Up!

October 2011

Happy October! Where is this year going?

We start on Saturday (Saturn's day of the week) with the Moon in Sagittarius. Think society, adventure, and yes, publication! Think this all month long. Not quite a couple hours after midnight, the Moon trines Uranus. You could discover something useful in a dream. Midmorning, the Moon trines Mars. Have a lively weekend and still get things done.

Sun Oct 02 the Moon is still in Sagittarius when Mars exactly squares Jupiter. It's okay to decide that some other project is more important.

Mon Oct 03 the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. This gets the work week off to a smart start.

Wed Oct 05 the Moon enters Aquarius in the early morning. Three out of four Wednesdays this month will see the Moon in a fixed sign. Make up your mind, and don't be distracted from your work.

Thu Oct 06 the Moon is still in Aquarius when Mercury exactly conjuncts Saturn. Aquarius is traditionally ruled by Saturn, so look forward to a day at a slower pace with fewer mistakes.

Fri Oct 07 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Aquarius, then goes void of course. Maybe it's better to be social and let people inspire you.

Sat Oct 08 the Moon is void of course in Pisces when Venus changes signs and enters Scorpio. If writing fiction, you can get deep into the emotional fabric of your characters. The Sun has reached 15 Libra, and tomorrow will take its first step onto the Fiery Road, the Via Combusta. Heads Up for the next month. Slack is being sucked out of the universe, and if you can avoid getting into any serious trouble, you can save yourself the out-of-proportion suffering that sometimes follows. Coast carefully and be a bit more serious than usual.

Mon Oct 10 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. It's a good day to outline new projects or draw up a new timetable.

Tue Oct 11 we have the Full Moon at 18 Aries. Ask the Universe to further something that is specifically yours, but don't be greedy. Eleven minutes later, the very full moon directly opposes Saturn. Heads Up. The Universe may still grant your wish but expect to work for it.

Wed Oct 12 the Moon is void of course in Aries when Mercury exactly trines Neptune. Heads Up. It's a day to make a lot of bad judgment calls. On the other hand, it's a great day to write high fantasy. Later that evening, the Moon will move on and enter Taurus. However the day went, comfort yourself.

Thu Oct 13 the Moon is in Taurus all day. In the middle of the night, Mercury changes signs and moves into Scorpio. Expect to think about more grim stuff. Midmorning, the Moon conjuncts Jupiter. This is usually lucky, so feel lucky and ignore that restless mercurial buzz. Midafternoon, the Sun exactly conjuncts Saturn. Heads Up. Respect authority, act with authority when it's expected (even if it feels uncomfortable), and be polite all round.

Fri Oct 14 the Moon is in Taurus all day, again, when Mercury and Venus position themselves into an applying conjunction. They will be waltzing around like this from now until almost the last week of December. Whatever planet aspects one of these planets will also aspect the other. Think celestial twins, not separated at birth. Heads Up. Make it a good heads up. Mercury and Venus can be very good for art and all things lightweight and congenial.

Sat Oct 15 the Moon enters Gemini. We have from this morning until early Monday evening to indulge our mercurial passions and write our hearts and heads out. Go for it.

Sun Oct 16 the Moon is in the depths of Gemini when ruling planet Mercury sextiles Pluto. Given that Mercury is in Scorpio now, you can confront some uncharacteristically heavy subjects and get some serious work done. Or you may just overhear or share in some profound conversation or confession. Be respectful, but we all know that people write fiction so they can tell the truth (at least, that's my excuse).

Mon Oct 17 the Moon is in the end degrees of Gemini when Mercury opposes Jupiter. Heads Up. Don't think too many big thoughts or have wildly big opinions. You'll only be deflated and change your mind anyway. The Moon goes void of course in the afternoon, and enters Cancer in the early evening. This can calm things down fast.

Wed Oct 19 the Moon is in Cancer all day, going void of course in the evening. Get the important stuff done before the afternoon ends. This is our one Wednesday with the Moon not in a fixed sign. Relax the mania a bit and just get some work done. You don't have to actually finish it today (unless you must).

Fri Oct 21 the Moon conjuncts Mars in Leo. This can a Moon on fire, but a happy fire. Be as low-key as you can manage, and be willing to play the clown. It can further your networking, and heavens knows people (especially other writers) suspect that most writers are clowns.

Sat Oct 22 the Moon enters Virgo in midmorning. This is the last day of the month for the Sun to be in Libra. We are now at the midway point of the Fiery Road, the Via Combusta. No point turning back now, even if we could. Tomorrow the world will be wildly and profoundly different. You can probably already feel the coming Scorpio backlash as the energy of this last degree of Libra turns deeply manipulative if not outright devious. Heads Up.
a
Sun Oct 23 the Moon is in Virgo when the Sun changes signs and slips into Scorpio. Heads Up. Be happy for the Virgo energy, and remember that Mercury rules Virgo, so Mercury and the Moon can relate. In fact, midmorning, the Moon sextiles Mercury, perhaps giving us too much permission to speak freely. Heads Up, but no need to severely censor yourself.

Tue Oct 25 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Libra. You can make good progress on some old project. It's also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up. With the Sun in Scorpio, on the Via Combusta. Heads Up. There's less tolerance for error, big or small, today. Be safe. Heads Up.

Wed Oct 26 the Moon is still in Libra when Mars sextiles Saturn. Whenever Mars and Saturn support each other, you just have to say 'thank you' and get as much done as you can, knowing that it'll probably all be done right the first time. After spending three hours void of course, the Moon enters Scorpio in the midmorning. You can get downright analytical about emotional stuff. Creepy, huh? By afternoon we have the New Moon at 03 Scorpio. If you're brave enough, you might get a brief peek behind the veil and learn something fantastic about yourself or human nature in general.

Thu Oct 27 the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Scorpio. Actually, the Moon occults Mercury. This mercurial hiding behind the disk of the Moon seems very Scorpionic, and appropriate. There are a lot of secrets being hidden these days, which gives us a lot to speculate and write about. Two and a half hours later, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Scorpio. Venus, however, will not hide. Beauty shines as brightly as ever.

Fri Oct 28 the Moon squares Neptune in Aquarius, then goes void of course. Three hours later the Moon enters Sagittarius and is there when Mercury squares Mars about twenty minutes after that. Avoid odd esoteric arguments that no one can win, unless writing an evil magician scene. Heads Up.

Sun Oct 30 the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. We got to enjoy this one earlier, back on Oct 03. We can do it again.

The month of October ends, of course, with Halloween. It's the third and final harvest festival of the year. Tradition has it that whatever has not been harvested out of your garden now belongs not to you but to the faeries, and we don't want them angry with us, now do we?

Halloween is also the day of the year when the veil between the worlds of physical and disincarnate realities is at its thinnest. Energies and consciousness can sometimes move from one world to the other, and hopefully back again. I think the planetary aspects have been building up to this since the October 25 New Moon.

Don't let things creep you out. It's only the Moon in Scorpio, and that happens every month. It's not always the new moon, though. It's a month to address things like sex, death, other people's money, and all those other unspeakable and unspoken things. Dig in deep, be brave, and see what you can find in your work this month. It'll be a lot, I know, because this is the month for substance, relevance, and integrity. Your work has it all, because you do and you put yourself into what you do. Be profoundly outrageously brilliantly powerful and fearless. Every word and thought carries weight. Have a fantastic month! Heads Up!

Happy Autumnal Equinox. Go balance something.

Seriously. This is one of the two days of the year when there are 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night, everywhere, all over the world. (The other day, of course, is the vernal equinox, the first day of spring.)

On the first day of autumn, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, heading south. The Sun rises exactly due east on the horizon, and sets due west. Go out and look. Be careful driving, though, because a lot of streets run due east-west, and you could get sun-blinded at sunrise or sunset. If you're familiar with the neighborhoods, of course, you already know this.

It also means that in the Northern Hemisphere, the days are getting shorter and the nights longer. Being a hardcore stargazer, it pleases me to think of the nights getting longer.

This year the Moon is in the tropical sign Leo when the Sun reaches 0 degrees Libra. In 1999, though, we had the Moon in mid-Pisces when the Sun entered Libra. Had the Moon been nearer the end of Pisces, or at 0 degrees Aries, we would've had a full moon to go with the autumnal equinox. This was close enough, though, that (in the San Francisco area at least), if you went outside at sunset you'd see the new risen Full Moon. If you faced north (or south, I don't care) and reached out your arms, you could "hold" the setting sun in one hand and "hold" the Full Moon in the other. Now that's balance!

Checking the ephemeris, it seems we won't have another autumnal equinox Sun and (almost) Full Moon until September 2018. For the Sun and Moon to (almost) repeat their positions in 19 years tells me that the Metonic Cycle is involved (something we normally only think about in terms of eclipses).

Enjoy having a little extra balance in the world, if only for a day!
