Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

March 2017

times are PST through March 11. From March 12 on, times are PDT.

March on! We start on a Wednesday, Mercury’s day of the week, and we all know how hard it is for Mercury to sit still for long. Up and at ’em!

Wed Mar 01 the Moon is in Aries all day. The very busy Moon squares Pluto in the wee hours. A rocky dream could knock free a sticking point in a story. The Moon conjoins Uranus at 10:27 am and then opposes Jupiter at 10:43 am. Heads Up. Surprises rarely make everybody happy. The Moon next conjoins Mars at 1:48 pm. Heads Up. Don’t get frustrated. Get working. The Moon then trines Saturn and goes void of course at 6:18 pm. Have a calmer, better organized evening. In case you haven’t had enough stimulation for one day, the Sun conjoins Neptune in Pisces at 6:44 pm. Heads Up. Very few things are going to be what they seem. What else is new?

Thu Mar 02 the Moon in Taurus now sextiles Mercury at 2:48 pm. Figure things out faster than ever. At 5:15 pm Jupiter exactly opposes Uranus. This has been a long time developing. Heads Up anyway. Even rampant craziness may later prove to have something good about it.

Sat Mar 04 the Moon is in the end of Taurus when Venus goes stationary retrograde at 1:09 am. Put romance projects on hold, or proceed at a slower pace. At 2:05 am the Moon enters Gemini. This should lighten and brighten our dreams and plans for the next couple of days. Whatever else is going on in the sky, the Moon in Gemini is our friend for creativity, connectivity, and fun. Heads Up. Mercury then conjoins Neptune at 3:10. Heads Up for dreams and more dreams. You may not remember them all.

Sun Mar 05 the Moon is in Gemini all day long. Be happy and productive. At 12:46 pm Mars trines Saturn. We can use all the stabilizing forward-motion that we can get. Heads Up.

Mon Mar 06 the Moon leaves Gemini and enters Cancer at 4:54 am. Consider a good breakfast when you get up. At 4:29 pm, the Sun conjoins Mercury in Pisces. Heads Up! Sometimes it’s better to think with your heart.

Tue Mar 07 the Moon is in Cancer when Mercury is sextile Pluto. Is it minor rewrite time?

Wed Mar 08 the Moon enters Leo at 8:45 am. Turn up the heat and write away!

Thu Mar 09 the Moon is in Leo when Mars changes signs, leaving its home Aries and entering Taurus. Heads Up. Take a more proactive and practical approach to your writing projects. A more business-minded attitude is appropriate.

Sun Mar 12 the Moon is in practical Virgo when Pacific Standard Time is abandoned for Pacific Daylight Time. It was nice while it lasted. At 7:54 am, we have the Full Moon at 22 Vir. Heads Up. When the little things sound and feel right, the whole piece is probably right. This is the lunar month to work on the fine points.

Mon Mar 13 the Moon is in Libra when Mercury changes signs, leaving Pisces and moving into Aries. Heads Up! Think more about your own stuff now. It’s about time.

Tue Mar 14 the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Libra at 2:52 pm. Have a lucky afternoon and evening. Heads Up. At 6:05 pm the Moon opposes Uranus. The unexpected is more welcome now and will find you better prepared.

Wed Mar 15 the Moon enters Scorpio at 8:11 am. Do serious work in a serious frame of mind. Judge none of it now. Just do it.

Fri Mar 17 the Moon is in Scorpio when the Sun squares Saturn. Heads Up. There may be conflicting voices of authority. Now there’s a useful plot device.

Sat Mar 18 the Moon is in Sagittarius when Mercury conjoins Venus in Aries. Heads Up. It may be a more social weekend. We all deserve to relax and blow off some steam from time to time. At 1:59 pm, the Moon trines Venus. Present yourself nicely. It doesn’t matter that Venus is retrograde. At 4:06 pm, the Moon trines Mercury. Heads Up. So long as you don’t say more than you intend, things should be fine. Overwriting is always permitted, so long as you cut later on.

Sun Mar 19 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. The real news is that today is the last day that the Sun spends in moody, meditative Pisces. Tomorrow the world may seem faster, brighter, and a bit more on fire. Heads Up.

Mon Mar 20 the Moon is in the end of Sagittarius when the Sun leaves Pisces, concluding its traverse of the whole zodiac to begin again as it enters Aries. Heads Up. For many people, the first day of spring is the true new years day. For a peek at the upcoming three months, do an ingress chart now. The Sun enters Aries at 3:29 am. The Moon conjoins Saturn at 3:37 am and promptly goes void of course. Heads Up. Slow down and get systematic. The Moon enters Capricorn at 8:31 am. You may even have made a list by now. Near day’s end, the Moon makes a square with Venus at 11:32 pm. Venus is retrograde now, remember. Write that lovers’ spat scene now.

Tue Mar 21 the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn at 10:32 pm. Heads Up. Just keep working hard and don’t get nervous. You’ve been through this before.

Wed Mar 22 the Moon is void of course in Capricorn most of the day. You can ignore distractions and get a lot done. At 7:28 pm the Moon enters Aquarius. Keep working if you like, but think bigger.

Fri Mar 24 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury opposes Jupiter. It’s hard to think too big, but it happens.

Sat Mar 25 the Moon is in Pisces when the Sun conjoins Venus in Aries. Heads Up for romance writers. Lovers want to be selfish now, in case your protagonist needs motivation.

Sun Mar 26 the Moon conjoins Neptune at 1:23 am. Enjoy intense if not sweet dreams. At 8:06 am Mercury conjoins Uranus in Aries. Heads Up for an over-headed mind. Get clever in the extreme. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up in all the safe and cautious ways.

Mon Mar 27 the Moon enters Aries at 7:11 am. A very dark Moon conjoins Venus at 12:59 pm. Love may be turned inward but it will still be hidden. Romantic mysteries always need secrets. At 7:57 pm we have the New Moon at 07 Ari. Heads Up for a fiery, powerfully self-motivated month of working on your own stuff.

Tue Mar 28 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Heads Up for a continuation of yesterday’s New Moon. Think innovations rather than shocks or surprises.

Wed Mar 29 the Moon conjoins Mercury in Aries. A personal matter may come into instant focus. If you make that phone call, be polite. At 11:16 pm Mercury makes a trine with Saturn. This might help keep things under control tomorrow.

Thu Mar 30 the Moon conjoins Mars in Taurus. Work diligently and with tremendous passion.

Fri Mar 31 the Moon enters Gemini at 9:40 am. We have until midday Sunday April 2 to do our mercurial best and be mischievously, wildly productive. Go for it.

At 10:31 am Mercury changes signs, leaving Aries and entering Taurus. Thoughts may get less flashy and acquire a tint of elegance. Use sparingly.

March is full of the madness of Mars as well as the aloof, critical distance of a Venus retrograde. It starts off with the Sun-Neptune conjunction to mystify things before they can even get started. Never mind. We are used to these complications, and more besides. We create worlds, populate them with people of our devising, toss the wild and unexpected at them, and find solutions to problems that no one else has thought of before. It’s what we do.

Keep doing it! Heads Up!

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

February 2017

all times PST

February! We’re ripping through this year. Are you writing as fast? Do it. There’s a lot going on, and a lot to say. We start with the Moon at the start of the Zodiac, in Aries. It’s a Wednesday, Mercury’s day of the week, so we can craft a month of sharp, fiery wit, if we so choose.

Wed Feb 01 the Moon is in Aries all day. Mercury is sextile Chiron. Don’t be afraid to write about what hurts. Don’t be afraid at all. You don’t have to show it to anyone.

Thu Feb 02 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Be bold and surprise yourself. Look at something from a radically different angle. A few hours later Mercury squares Jupiter. If you think you’ve gone overboard, so what? That’s what editing is all about.

Fri Feb 03 the Moon is in Taurus when Venus leaves Pisces and enters Aries. Aesthetics gets brighter, bolder, sharper, and more realistic. Note that this is Venus’s day of the week, too.

Sat Feb 04 the Moon enters Gemini at 8:44 pm. Heads Up for mercurial activities and greater productivity of all kinds. Don’t waste a minute. Read, write, talk, listen, and network.

Sun Feb 05 the Moon is in Gemini when Jupiter turns stationary retrograde in Libra. This buys us more time to work on relationships, like with agents, writing partners and groups, publishers, you get the idea.

Mon Feb 06 the Moon leaves Gemini at 11:03 pm and enters Cancer. It may have been mostly the weekend, but did you get much done? Did you accumulate more research material? Did you eavesdrop enough? (How is that ever possible for a writer?)

Tue Feb 07 the Moon is in Cancer when Mercury leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius. Thoughts and thought processes may widen in scope and become sharper. The little things can be the big things, and big things little. It’s in the nature of metaphor.

Wed Feb 08 the Moon is in Cancer all day. Do you work at home? Good. If not, do you work with dedication? Good. Remember, all day. A break for tea is permitted.

Fri Feb 10 we have the Full Moon at 22 Leo. It’s also a Lunar Eclipse. Heads Up. Acknowledge the nobility of what you do. You may be speaking for more than just yourself. Your audience is also much bigger than you realize. Make this your mission in the coming lunar month.

Wed Feb 15 the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Libra. Be lucky with writing partners and critique groups. We are having a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in cardinal signs. Start projects, Start some cleanup efforts that complete projects but don’t feel like completions. You know what they say in fiction: every good ending is a beginning.

Fri Feb 17 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. Be serious. If you can’t be serious, be sincere. Today is the last day that the Sun spends in the cool crisp air of Aquarius. Tomorrow the world may seem more murky and emotional. Heads Up.

Sat Feb 18 the Moon is still in Scorpio when the Sun changes signs, leaves Aquarius, and enters Pisces. Heads Up. Feelings get deeper and emotional currents may develop rip tides. Love what you do, and do it with abandon. Sometimes no boundaries can work in your favor. About seven hours later the Moon enters Sagittarius. Don’t isolate yourself. Get out and see what the current mood is.

Mon Feb 20 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. You may not work fast, but you will work anyway. No number of distractions (and they may be several) will stop you.

Tue Feb 21 the Moon is in Capricorn when Mercury makes a trine with Jupiter. Ideas and plot complications fall out of the sky for you today. If you’re not outlining or plotting, take notes for later. You have to be grateful whenever it’s easy.

Wed Feb 22 the Moon is in Capricorn all day. At 1:03 am Mars squares Pluto. Heads Up. It’s a good day to write scenes rich in conflict, disagreement, and clashes of will of all kinds. Try to keep it on the page. At 11:34 am the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. Tighten the seatbelt on your writing chair and don’t let the world knock you sideways. Heads Up.

Thu Feb 23 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury makes a sextile with Saturn. A cool, well organized head prevails today and you can fix a lot of structural problems. It’s also not a bad day to copy edit or proofread.

Sat Feb 25 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury moves out of Aquarius and enters Pisces at 3:07 pm. Work diligently early in the day and be ahead of the game if the afternoon gets disorganized. At 4:24 pm the Moon enters Pisces. If you’re too easily distracted, take a break and walk away for a bit. At 4:36 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury in Pisces. Heads Up. It’s rarely possible to do or say everything that’s in your mind. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up for safety’s sake.

Sun Feb 26 we have the New Moon at 08 Pis. It’s also a Solar Eclipse. Heads Up! This eclipse is very close to Neptune, too, so the outside world may be more moody than usual. This is at 6:58 am. At 12:56 pm the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. A dream may try to make its way into the waking world. Make it a constructive dream. At 4:19 pm Mars conjoins Uranus in Aries. Restlessness and recklessness are a dangerous combination. Maybe put off that rewrite for a while. Heads Up.

Mon Feb 27 the Moon is in Pisces when Mars opposes Jupiter. Heads Up. It may not be a great day to do that editing and trimming the word count (although it’s almost always good to kill adverbs on sight). It’s a great day for rereading, though.

Tue Feb 28 the Moon is in Aries all day. The Moon conjoins Venus at 6:55 pm. If the work day was all business, the evening is great for a social escape. It’s Mardi Gras. Let the good times roll in a beautiful way!

It’s a short but serious month, with eclipses and a very active Mars. You can resist kneejerk reactions, impatient decisions, bad tempers, and unfounded anger by keeping your eye on your work. One good thing about Pisces is that it let’s the whole world in without you needing to open the door for it. You can write about anything, and perhaps you should give it a short try if you haven’t already.

There are rules and conventions in writing. The good news is, when you create a fictional world, you make the rules, too. If the outside real world gets unreasonable (like it usually is), you can still keep a grip on the world you are creating. Your characters, and your audience, are counting on you. Heads Up!!

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

January 2017

(all times are PST)

Happy New Year! Another year bites the dust, We can make this new one as happy and productive a year as we want and need. The year starts on a Sunday, the Sun’s day of the week. So long as we remember to shine, every day, we can reach out and touch gold. Be the best we can be. Write the best and truest that we can write. That’s the Sun for you.

Sun Jan 01 the Moon is Aquarius all day. Think big, observe more of the big picture, and prepare for a bigger audience. The Moon makes a trine with Jupiter in the morning. Being lucky wants to be easy. Late that night, the Moon conjoins Venus. Prepare to be popular and in demand.

Mon Jan 02 the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. Sweet dreams, sleeping or waking. Two and a half hours later the Moon conjoins Mars. Now here’s motivation. Shortly before midnight, Venus changes signs, leaves Aquarius and enters Pisces. Feel better connected to your work.

Wed Jan 04 the Moon is in Pisces when Mercury retrograde changes signs, slipping out of Capricorn and back into Sagittarius. Keep working hard anyway. There’s no rush.

Thu Jan 05 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Spot, or invent, a plot twist. Two hours later the Moon makes an opposition to Jupiter. If it’s not working out to your pleasure, pull back a little.

Fri Jan 06 the Moon is in Taurus when the Sun conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. Heads Up. Don’t let anything sudden throw you off balance. Do solid work, and feel secure in your writers’ circle or other literary support group.

Sun Jan 08 the Moon is in Taurus when Mercury goes stationary direct. Heads Up in the best of ways. That wasn’t so bad, was it? And you got a lot of work done. Furthermore, at 2:06 pm the Moon departs from Taurus and enters Gemini. It’s a great start to a Mercurial writing/reading/networking bash that lasts into Tuesday afternoon. It’s another bright Heads Up!

Tue Jan 10 the Moon is still in Gemini when the Sun squares Uranus. Be flexible and don’t expect a recent surprise fix to solve all your problems. At 1:38 pm the Moon opposes Mercury and then goes void of course until the Moon enters Cancer at 2:49 pm. I consider this an excuse for an early tea time.

Wed Jan 11 the Moon is in Cancer all day. Resist constant snacking, although the random work break is perfectly fine.

Thu Jan 12 we have the Full Moon at 22Can. Heads Up. You know what you love to do, and where to do it, and for whom you do it. Hold those thoughts. Two and a half hours later Mercury changes signs and reenters Capricorn. If work ethic has been fading, this will revive it.

Wed Jan 18 the Moon is in Libra all day and conjoins Jupiter near the end, at 11:27 pm. Work with authority and feel lucky all day. Today is also the last day that the Sun spends in the sign of Capricorn. Tomorrow the world may not seem much warmer, but it may seem bigger and brighter.

Thu Jan 19 the Moon is in Libra when the Sun moves out of Capricorn and enters Aquarius. Heads Up. Your audience is bigger than you realize. About a half hour later, the Moon enters Scorpio. Scorpio and Aquarius are two Fixed signs and this can add a lot of stubbornness and persistence to your day. Work through and with it. Heads Up.

Tue Jan 24 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. You can be serious in a sociable, fun way. It’s a good mix of energies for constructive networking.

Wed Jan 25 the Moon is in Capricorn all day. At 3:58 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury. Write on!

Thu Jan 26 the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. Have you gotten serious yet? If not, consider doing so now. This is also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up for safety and being smart in general.

Fri Jan 27 is the New Moon at 08 Aqu. Heads Up. Start something new and big, and not aimed at yourself. At 9:39 pm, Mars changes signs, leaving Pisces and entering its home sign Aries. Heads Up! Jump out of the frying pan of planning and into the flames of creation.

Mon Jan 30 the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. Dreams are powerful. Don’t toss them aside.

Tue Jan 31 the Moon conjoins Venus in Pisces at 9:36 am and goes void of course. Stay emotionally committed to your work, in the biggest way possible.

The Moon enters Aries at 1:46 pm and conjoins Mars in Aries at 6:52 pm. Heads Up for an emotional and active day.

Shortly before the last year ended, there was the most magical conjunction of Mars and Neptune. Neptune is the master dream maker. Mars is the master motivator and is the master of manifesting in the real world. Dream with extreme prejudice what you want for the coming year, and make it happen.

2017 is a brand new year, and it’s ours. No matter what the outside world sends our way, we have control of our inner world. That’s where our best work comes from. Without that, what chance do we have of seeing ourselves for what we are? We control the horizontal. We control the vertical. We do. It’s ours. Every single day. One day at a time. Ours. Make this the best, strongest, brightest year yet. Heads Up!

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

October 2016

October starts on a Saturday with the Moon in Libra. Weekends with the Sun in Libra can all be party time, and there’s no bigger party than the one you write. Go out and have some fun, too, okay?

Mon Oct 03 the Moon conjoins Venus in Scorpio. Polish something that you really care about. It doesn’t matter if no one else ever gets to see it.

Wed Oct 05 the Moon enters Sagittarius at 1:26 am. Dream big. Write big. Edit later.

Thu Oct 06 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. Just like yesterday, dream and work big, but now with a bit more control. Skip any critique and edit later.

Fri Oct 07 the Moon is still in Sagittarius when Mercury changes signs, finally leaving Virgo and entering Libra. Thoughts turn to social interactions, fairness and fun, and how to cleverly keep the peace. Now there are some big literary themes. (continue reading…)

September 2016

(all times are PDT)

Like New Moons? Like Solar Eclipses? Happy September 1! Start the month with a fresh approach, and a fresh feeling. Autumn is not that far off. And remember, Mercury is retrograde.

Thu Sep 01 is the New Moon and Solar Eclipse at 9 Vir. Heads Up. It’s pretty much opposed Neptune, too. Be safe and work on the small important stuff first. In the evening the Sun squares Saturn. Don’t judge what you wrote today. You’ll like it better tomorrow.

Fri Sep 02 the Sun makes an opposition to Neptune at 9:38 am. Let the dreamy fog dissolve and see things more clearly. At 10:18 am Mercury retrograde conjoins Jupiter in Virgo. Trust your first impression, write fast, and edit later. At 3:00 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury, and at 3:13 pm the Moon conjoins Jupiter and goes void of course. Write fast, write a lot and don’t worry about how much of it may make the cut. At long last the Moon enters Libra at 5:55 pm. Now go have a pleasant evening.

Sat Sep 03 the Moon conjoins Venus in Libra. Hold your head up high and smile. You’re writing. You don’t even have to tell anybody about it. (continue reading…)

August starts on a Monday with the Moon in Cancer until the evening. Feelings are high but they may also be tender. It’s also the day before the New Moon in Leo. Heads Up!

Tue Aug 02 the Moon is very dark in Leo when Mars changes signs, leaves Scorpio and enters Sagittarius. About two hours later is the New Moon at 10 Leo. Things should really brighten up now. Don’t let anything get you down.

Wed Aug 03 the Moon is in Leo all day. Write like the champion you are. In the evening the Moon conjoins Venus in Leo and then goes void of course. Don’t worry about making anything look or sound better. Do that later.

Thu Aug 04 the Moon conjoins Mercury in Virgo at 1:43 am. Want to take a closer look at what you did yesterday? Go ahead but don’t be harsh. At night at 9:57 pm the Moon opposes Neptune. You can change your opinion about something but don’t act on it until tomorrow.

Fri Aug 05 the Moon is in Virgo when Venus changes signs and enters Virgo. Aesthetics remain refined but details matter more. Think little pearl buttons, all buttoned down. About twelve hours later the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Virgo and goes void of course. You may not feel that you’re doing enough, but that’s just the big picture talking. Stay on track, do little things, but maybe more of them. (continue reading…)

July 2016

(all times are PDT)

July starts on a Friday (the day of the week for Venus) with the Moon just slipping into super-writer-friendly Gemini. We can spend the whole darn month working and feeling good about everything and everyone. Yes, we can. Only Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto are retrograde now. The other inner planets are all direct. We can let the outer world go spin its wheels as we get on with our inner lives a bit more often.

Fri July 01 the Moon is in Gemini and will be there until early Sunday morning. Be your best mercurial, inventive, clever self and see how much you learn and accomplish. (continue reading…)

June starts on a Wednesday, Mercury’s day of the week. That can keep the little mind active! The Sun itself is in Gemini, too. Do good things with this. Mars, Saturn, and Pluto are all retrograde now. By the middle of the month Neptune will be retrograde, too. Don’t be in too big a rush to do anything. Take your time. Do your best.

Wed Jun 01 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Heads Up. A frivolous little surprise is always a good excuse for a work break. Don’t let it eat the day.

Fri Jun 03 the Moon conjoins Mercury in Taurus. Work hard and be sociable. Yes, you can do both, although maybe not at the same time. At 8:01 pm the Moon leaves Taurus and enters the sign of Gemini. Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

May 2016

(all times PDT)

May! We are in the incredible heart of spring. Five planets are retrograde now, including Mercury, but that won’t last. If life has been hectic, here’s our chance to shift into a slightly lower gear.

Sun May 01 the Moon is void of course in Aquarius when the Sun makes a sextile with Neptune. That can give a boost to dreams and inspiration. Later in the morning the Moon moves into Pisces. Enjoy the dreamy atmosphere but don’t float away.

Mon May 02 the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. The mental fog may thicken, but you can work through, and even with, it. If you’re feeling weepy, blot those eyes and keep writing.

Tue May 03 the Moon is void of course in Pisces when the Sun trines Jupiter (which is still retrograde, by the way). Take on a big project or chip the corner off a big work in progress. There’s no rush. The Moon enters Aries in the late morning. Let your motivation heat up and see how much you can get done.

Wed May 04 the Moon is in Aries all day. Take your vitamins, work hard, and blast away. At 9:17 pm the Moon conjoins Uranus and goes void of course. The Moon may still be in Aries, but the evening should be less hyper, crazy or surprising perhaps but less hyper.

Thu May 05 the Moon enters Taurus at 10:10 am. Work habits can get steadier. Take pleasure in your work all day, as the Moon conjoins Venus at 10:12 pm. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Maybe I should say Heads Up. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Definitely Heads Up! Play it safe and smart.

Fri May 06 is the New Moon in 16 Tau at 12:30 pm. Have a productive and profitable month just by doing what comes naturally (that’s often what we do best anyway). At 7:10 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury retrograde and goes void of course. You don’t need to manically write through the evening, but you might.

Sat May 07 the Moon leaves Taurus at 9:35 am and enters the gloriously creative and infinitely curious sign of Gemini. We have from now until Monday morning to be our most mercurial (in the good sense), conversational, and constructive selves. Do good things!

Sun May 08 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Are you still reading, writing, and socializing? Take mental notes. (continue reading…)
