Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

September 2017

All times are PDT.

September! The Sun is in less hysterical Virgo, Mercury is still retrograde, and the solar eclipse is behind us, mostly. The month starts on a Friday, the day of the week for Venus. Stay cheerful, keep working, and it will be autumn and Libra season before we know it. This is no time to slack.

Fri Sept 01 the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. End the week serious about a project you love. Happiness is visible progress, however little or much.

Sun Sept 03 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury retrograde conjoins Mars in Leo. This happens at 28 Leo, the same degree as last month’s solar eclipse. Heads Up. The end of Leo is powerful, even without the lingering effects of a solar eclipse. Take your work in hand and be a king or queen for the day.

Mon Sept 04 the Moon in Aquarius opposes Mercury retrograde at 7:33 pm. You can fix something minor that makes a major improvement. At 10:18 pm the Moon opposes Mars and goes void of course. It’s fine to put down the pen or turn off the computer and pause. When not writing, reading is always good. The Moon is still void of course when the Sun opposes Neptune at 10:28 pm. (My computer’s ephemeris thinks that the Moon enters Pisces at 10:28 pm and the Sun-Neptune opposition is at 10:36 pm with the Moon already at 00 Pis 04. Go figure.) Regardless, in the US, it’s Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer. Share a hot dog or hamburger with a friend, or a fan.

Tue Sept 05 the Moon is in Pisces when Mars changes signs, leaving Leo at last and enters Virgo. Motivation returns to getting the daily work done, or caught up. At 4:29 am Mercury goes stationary direct at 28 Leo, the degree of the solar eclipse. Heads Up. If you’ve felt that there has been something important that has escaped you, you have a good chance of seeing and understanding it now. At 10:07 pm the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. Dreams may help solve a plot tangle or a character complication.

Wed Sept 06 we have the Full Moon at 12:03 am at 13 Pis. Heads Up. This is virtually on top of Neptune. Dreams don’t get much more powerful or evocative than this. If you want to meditate or sit quietly for part of today and see what comes to you, that could be good.

Sat Sept 09 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. This is always good for getting out and contacting new people or having them contact you. The Moon is in Taurus when Mercury changes signs, exits Leo and enters its nocturnal home Virgo. Heads Up for all good editorial things. Mercury is direct now. Write fresh material perhaps about a new topic. Keep it to a manageable size, for the time being.

Mon Sept 11 the Moon enters Gemini at 12:29 pm. Heads Up for all your favorite mercurial activities that further your writing work. Write, read, converse, chat, email, text away. You get the idea. You know that this window of opportunity isn’t open for long.

Wed Sept 13 the Moon in Gemini sextiles Uranus at 11:35 am and goes void of course. Is there an off the wall idea that you haven’t yet pursued? Time is short. At 3:12 pm the Moon leaves Gemini and enters Cancer. It is so tea time!

Sat Sept 16 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury conjoins Mars in Virgo. This conjunction should be way different from the one on Sept. 03. Heads Up for all good things. With the Moon in Leo, there could still be some eclipse repercussions but work life and social life are approaching normal, sort of. This Mercury-Mars conjunction should have less second-guessing or self-criticisms. Grab an idea, and go for it.

Sun Sept 17 the Moon conjoins Venus in Leo. This is a formula for fun. You deserve it.

Mon Sept 18 the Moon conjoins Mars in Virgo at 12:48 pm. If you didn’t get much done over the weekend, you can play catch-up now. Then, the Moon conjoins Mercury at 4:20 pm. Take notes, if nothing else. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Automatic Heads Up. Be practical, cautious, and safe.

Tue Sept 19 the very dark Moon is in Virgo when Venus changes signs at 6:15 pm and enters Virgo. Heads Up. Work gets less flashy but more substantial. Modest can be powerful and good. At 8:50 pm Mercury makes an exact opposition to Neptune. Inspiration is strong, and so is clearer vision about what is possible or impossible. We have the New Moon at 10:30 pm at 27 Vir, and the Moon promptly goes void of course. Heads Up. Look forward to a lunar month of solid progress, with few loose ends at the end to slow you down later. Feel good about it all.

Wed Sept 20 the Moon enters Libra at 3:06 am. it could be a good day for your writing critique group to meet. Chat with your co-author, or agent, or prospective publisher. Or, make a fresh pot of tea and write that polite political commentary piece.

Thu Sept 21 the Moon is in Libra all day. More interesting is that today is the last day that the Sun spends in meticulous Virgo. Tomorrow the world may seem a bit more loose, casual, and agreeable. Heads Up.

Fri Sept 22 the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Libra at 3:27 am. Wake up feeling lucky and grateful for past generosities. The Moon has moved into Scorpio when Mercury makes a trine with Pluto at 11:01 am. You can pull off that outrageous plot twist and make it look like destiny. At 1:02 pm the Sun leaves Virgo and enters the more sociable and diplomatic sign of Libra. Heads Up. For a peek at the next three months, you could cast an ingress chart. (I’m normally too lazy and prefer being surprised, but’s natal Mars in Libra for you.)

Sun Sept 24 the Moon is still in Scorpio when Mars makes a magical if problematic opposition to Neptune. Heads Up. This is celestial mischief like little else. A brilliant, daring idea may backfire, so act accordingly. This has plot possibilities, does it not?

Tue Sept 26 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. You can be the voice of reason in the loudest gathering. Reflect on this for possible use in a scene or for character development.

Wed Sept 27 the Moon in Sagittarius trines Uranus in Aries and then goes void of course at 4:08 am. A trine in Fire is usually good for a kick-start if motivation has been sagging. The Moon enters Capricorn at 9:24 am. At 9:23 pm Jupiter in Libra makes an opposition with Uranus in Aries. If this is a Heads Up, it has been and will be a heads up for a long time. If something big has been started, it can gain momentum now. If there is only the seed of an idea for something big, there is plenty of time to plant it and get it growing. You don’t have to write the next War and Peace, but you get the idea.

Thu Sept 28 the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn at 7:27 pm. If you would rather write than socialize, it’s understandable. Earlier, at 12:36 pm Pluto goes stationary direct. Pluto has been retrograde since April 20. This is the classic outer planet case of “did you miss me?”

Fri Sept 29 the Moon is in Capricorn when Mercury changes signs, leaves Virgo and enters Libra. The month ends on a cheerful and optimistic note. You could also fall in love with your characters all over again.

September is about much more than just rebound and recovery from August and the eclipse. We are slowly leaving behind the late Leo incendiary conditions. The royal star Regulus has been strafed by a solar eclipse and global political conditions may reflect this for some time to come.

Let’s also remember that Regulus has precessed out of Leo and into the beginning of Virgo. Perhaps the clearest indication of this to me, speaking of the spiritual community, is that Louise Hay, the great queen of affirmations, has died and is now on the other side of the veil. It’s often hard to know what is a good thing or a bad thing. Being positive and objective strikes me as a better approach than being pessimistic, however realistic.

I write astrology in the spirit of affirmations, which is different from vacuous optimism and positive adages. Every day is a good day for something, ah, but for what? Sometimes it’s a good day for staying in bed, right?

Blast on through all obstacles, or pause and figure out a smarter way to proceed. With the Sun in Libra, we can commiserate, learn from one another, and take pleasure in the journey.

Happy Spring!

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

April 2017

All times are PDT.

It’s April, and no fooling! The month starts on a Saturday, Saturn’s day of the week, so skip the fooling around and get a jump on your work load and on whatever works for you.

Sat Apr 01 the Moon is in Gemini, and trine Jupiter retrograde. Write as much as you can. Or, get out and socialize as much as you can and gather material.

Sun Apr 02 the Moon in Gemini opposes Saturn at 7:43 am and goes void of course until 11:27 am when the Moon enters Cancer. Lunch time! Did you get a lot done? At 5:25 pm Venus retrograde changes signs and enters Pisces by the back door. Heads Up, especially for romance writers.

Wed Apr 5 the Moon is in Leo all day. Sit up straight and know that what you write really rocks. Saturn goes retrograde at 10:06 pm. Heads Up. It may be a bit harder to resist interruptions.

Fri Apr 7 the Moon is in Virgo when the Sun opposes Jupiter retrograde. Jupiter is at its brightest and will be high in the night sky around 1 am. Go out and look if you can. Heads Up. Take a good look at how lucky you really are, and appreciate it all. Submit work today, and keep in touch with agents, editors, and your writing critique buddies.

Sat Apr 8 the Moon is in Virgo all day. The big news is, tomorrow starts the second Mercury retrograde period of the year. Heads Up. Keep calm and get organized and systematic. Do you know where your phone is? Good.

Sun Apr 9 the Moon is in Libra when Mercury goes stationary retrograde at 4 Tau. Heads Up. Stay organized at work, keep your home finances organized, drive safely, and you’re good. If this retrograde slows down your productivity, don’t fret. The retrograde will end in Aries and you’ll more than make up for it.

Mon Apr 10 the Moon conjoins Jupiter retrograde at 3:58 pm. You should have luck contacting people now. We have the Full Moon at 21 Lib later at 11:08 pm. It’s a month to love and be loved. Love what you’re working on, too. Passover begins.

Wed Apr 12 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. Nothing can discourage you from your work, except perhaps yourself. Just do it and don’t look back.

Thu Apr 13 the Moon is in Scorpio when the Sun conjoins Uranus in in Aries at 10:30 pm. Heads Up. Write surprising events that have serious consequences.

Sat Apr 15 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. The big news is that Venus goes stationary direct at 26 Pis at 3:18 am. Heads Up. Write something secret and show it to no one. From April 15 through April 19 we have “only” three planets retrograde. Can you tell the difference? (continue reading…)

September 2016

(all times are PDT)

Like New Moons? Like Solar Eclipses? Happy September 1! Start the month with a fresh approach, and a fresh feeling. Autumn is not that far off. And remember, Mercury is retrograde.

Thu Sep 01 is the New Moon and Solar Eclipse at 9 Vir. Heads Up. It’s pretty much opposed Neptune, too. Be safe and work on the small important stuff first. In the evening the Sun squares Saturn. Don’t judge what you wrote today. You’ll like it better tomorrow.

Fri Sep 02 the Sun makes an opposition to Neptune at 9:38 am. Let the dreamy fog dissolve and see things more clearly. At 10:18 am Mercury retrograde conjoins Jupiter in Virgo. Trust your first impression, write fast, and edit later. At 3:00 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury, and at 3:13 pm the Moon conjoins Jupiter and goes void of course. Write fast, write a lot and don’t worry about how much of it may make the cut. At long last the Moon enters Libra at 5:55 pm. Now go have a pleasant evening.

Sat Sep 03 the Moon conjoins Venus in Libra. Hold your head up high and smile. You’re writing. You don’t even have to tell anybody about it. (continue reading…)

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

May 2016

(all times PDT)

May! We are in the incredible heart of spring. Five planets are retrograde now, including Mercury, but that won’t last. If life has been hectic, here’s our chance to shift into a slightly lower gear.

Sun May 01 the Moon is void of course in Aquarius when the Sun makes a sextile with Neptune. That can give a boost to dreams and inspiration. Later in the morning the Moon moves into Pisces. Enjoy the dreamy atmosphere but don’t float away.

Mon May 02 the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. The mental fog may thicken, but you can work through, and even with, it. If you’re feeling weepy, blot those eyes and keep writing.

Tue May 03 the Moon is void of course in Pisces when the Sun trines Jupiter (which is still retrograde, by the way). Take on a big project or chip the corner off a big work in progress. There’s no rush. The Moon enters Aries in the late morning. Let your motivation heat up and see how much you can get done.

Wed May 04 the Moon is in Aries all day. Take your vitamins, work hard, and blast away. At 9:17 pm the Moon conjoins Uranus and goes void of course. The Moon may still be in Aries, but the evening should be less hyper, crazy or surprising perhaps but less hyper.

Thu May 05 the Moon enters Taurus at 10:10 am. Work habits can get steadier. Take pleasure in your work all day, as the Moon conjoins Venus at 10:12 pm. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Maybe I should say Heads Up. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Definitely Heads Up! Play it safe and smart.

Fri May 06 is the New Moon in 16 Tau at 12:30 pm. Have a productive and profitable month just by doing what comes naturally (that’s often what we do best anyway). At 7:10 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury retrograde and goes void of course. You don’t need to manically write through the evening, but you might.

Sat May 07 the Moon leaves Taurus at 9:35 am and enters the gloriously creative and infinitely curious sign of Gemini. We have from now until Monday morning to be our most mercurial (in the good sense), conversational, and constructive selves. Do good things!

Sun May 08 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Are you still reading, writing, and socializing? Take mental notes. (continue reading…)

by Kathy Watts

January 18th-31st 2016

(times are all Pacific Standard Time, PST)

Mon Jan 18 the Moon is in Taurus all day. At 3:01 am Mars makes a trine with Neptune. There’s magic in this trine, and with Mars in Scorpio, it may not be gentle. It may be a good day to let a character’s emotions run wild, though. Heads Up.

Tue Jan 19 the Moon enters Gemini at 1:13 am. Heads Up for extra writerly and artistic self-indulgence and productivity. This will end early on Thursday, so jump right on it. It goes fast. It’s also the last day of the month that the Sun spends in Capricorn. Tomorrow the world will be bigger if not brighter, with wider perspective.

Wed Jan 20 the Moon is in Gemini when the Sun enters Aquarius at 7:27 am. Heads Up. If it’s been a work-crazed month so far, that might lighten up but the desire to work isn’t going to go away. Mercury retrograde is square Uranus at 10:26 am. This could be a Heads Up if you’re feeling mischievous.

Thu Jan 21 the Moon enters Cancer at 5:28 am. Treat yourself to a nice breakfast and keep working.

Fri Jan 22 the Moon is Cancer when at 1:59 am Mercury retrograde conjoins Pluto at 15 Cap. Alarming thoughts could try to grab hold of your imagination. Let them go. Mercury won’t be retrograde much longer and it’s moving slowly and powerfully through the sky. Heads Up. The Moon conjoins Mercury retrograde at 9:17 am. Your heart may speak more loudly than your head. The Moon then conjoins Pluto at 9:34 am. It’s an intense way to spend the morning, so maybe cut down on the coffee. By the way, the Moon is square Uranus at 11:32 am. Surprises may not be so pleasing now. It’s a sort of Heads Up day. (continue reading…)

January 1st-7th 2016

(times are all Pacific Standard Time, PST)

Happy New Year! Whatever 2015 gave or took away, 2016 is here now and we get a fresh start. Hard work and simply being sensible and realistic will get us through better than we might think. Take care of essentials and work hard on those things you love most. Like, ah, being creative and expressive. And remember, you are not alone. Starting the year with the Moon in Libra generates a firm, fond bond between us all. Write on!

Fri Jan 01 the Moon is in Libra all day. It’s a Venus day with the Moon in a sign ruled by Venus. Enjoy what pleases you most and indulge in the arts that inspire you. (Me, I’ve resumed reading War and Peace.) In the evening Mercury changes signs, leaving Capricorn and entering Aquarius. We can think about a bigger audience now.

Sun Jan 03 the Moon is still in Libra when Mars leaves Libra and enters its nocturnal home sign of Scorpio. (Even if you treat Pluto as the ruler of Scorpio, Mars is still extremely strong here, and much happier than being in Libra.) Get motivated and make some progress, no matter how much socializing happens. Midday, at 11:52 am the Moon also enters Scorpio. Get focused on your current work. By 1:12 pm, the Moon has caught up with Mars to make a conjunction. If you need to go home and shut the door to get things done, why not.

Mon Jan 04 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. The Moon is trine Neptune at 2:56 am, setting us up for a dreamy day. Don’t dream the day away, though. Tomorrow Mercury goes retrograde. Get mentally organized and be ready. Do you know where your phone and keys are? Good. Heads Up!

Tue Jan 05 is a Heads Up day. The Moon is in Scorpio when Mercury makes a square with Mars at 4:00 am. Heads Up. A dream may expose a flawed idea. Mercury then goes stationary retrograde at 5:06 am, at 01 Aqu. Heads Up. Get ready to repeat and improve something that you thought was finished. At 7:28 pm, the Sun conjoins Pluto, at 15Cap. Heads Up. If tensions have been mounting all day, blame it on this. At last, the Moon enters Sagittarius at 10:56 pm. Whew. (continue reading…)

October 1st-10th 2015

(all times are PDT)

Autumn is upon us! October starts with the Moon in Taurus, but a few hours later the Moon slips into writer-friendly Gemini. Let’s combine that patient, persistent hard-working spirit with the sparkly gleeful curiosity and verve for words (and so many other things). Mercury is still retrograde, but that won’t hold us back. It will just make us more careful and skillful. Take it as a plus. The Moon enters Gemini at 1:03 pm.  We have from now until Saturday afternoon to be our most productive and playful. Don’t waste a minute. (continue reading…)
