Heads Up! The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

February 2013

Welcome to short and sweet February. (It might be cold, too.)  We start on the sweet Venus day of Friday with the Moon in Libra (one of the two signs ruled by Venus). Go for pleasantness and nice manners all month long. It can take you further than you suspect.

Fri Feb 01 is a busy day, with Mars changing signs, leaving Aquarius and entering Pisces. Some impatience may come with this, so keep that daily word count going and don’t get frustrated or grind to a halt. (This applies till Mars get into Aries, in mid March). Venus also changes signs, moving from Capricorn into Aquarius. The whole tone and attitude we take towards our work may brighten and lighten up. The overall atmosphere will still be serious.

Sat Feb 02 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio. It’s Saturn’s day of the week, too. You don’t have to be serious and grim out in the world socially, though. A touch more seriousness, at the right time with the right person about the right subject, can earn respect. Just avoid, or ration, frivolity.

Mon Feb 04 the Moon is in Sagittarius when Mars exactly conjuncts Neptune. This is a magical combination. What you write today can not only shine but glow , glow in the dark, and maybe even pour light into a dark corner. Heads up, for good or ill.

Tue Feb 05 the Moon is still in Sagittarius when Mercury changes signs and enters Pisces. This could be good for writing plot complications where a character’s head and heart are in conflict. Don’t let it seep into the real world, if you can.

Wed Feb 06 the Moon enters hard-working Capricorn in the late morning. It’s your classic work day. In the afternoon, Mercury conjuncts Neptune. This could be writing magic, or at least inspiration for the intellect. We’re getting a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in a cardinal sign.

Thu Feb 07 the Moon conjuncts Pluto. Yet another day that feels serious. Heads up. The universe is giving us permission to not fritter away all our time and energy on silly stuff. It can feel really good to do a bit of serious work. It doesn’t matter how little. Do it, and feel accomplished, because you are.

Fri Feb 08 the Moon is void of course in Capricorn when Mercury conjuncts Mars. It’s a great day to write fight scenes and arguments. Sidestep such opportunities out in public if you can, though. It is a Venus day, so this might help people to play nicer. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up.

Sat Feb 09 the Moon conjuncts Venus in Aquarius. End of day is the New Moon at 21Aqu. Make this a month to resolve to do good, do good to others, and refrain from evil. Sappy sounding perhaps, but such an attitude can improve your work (and its promotion.)

Sun Feb 10 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. It’s the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake. Dreams for and about the future are appropriate, as are dreams of change and transformations. We really are not stuck in these same old skins.

Mon Feb 11 the Moon conjunct Mars in Pisces. Heads up. Feelings may be near the surface, with energy to do rash things with them. About four hours later the Moon conjuncts Mercury, yes, in Pisces. This may cloud thinking for a bit or make it easier to get into obscure poetry. That evening, with the Moon void of course in Pisces, Mercury sextiles Pluto. Now we could probably write some obscure poetry. Why not?

Tue Feb 12 the Moon is still void of course in Pisces when Mercury trines Saturn. It may be hard to settle down, but get a bit of work done, and save the partying for the evening. It’s Mardi Gras. Let the good times roll!

Wed Feb 13 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Work intently on your own stuff. Remember to not be too rude to anyone who interrupts.

Sun Feb 17 the Moon enters writer-friendly Gemini in the late afternoon. We have from now till the wee smalls of Wed Feb 20 to write our little hearts out. Today is also the last day we have of the Sun in the sign of Aquarius. Don’t be surprised if people (including yourself) seem a bit more cool and distant. Tomorrow the world may be more emotional, expansive, and touchy-feely.

Mon Feb 18 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter in Gemini. Eight whole minutes later, the Sun moves out of Aquarius and in the sign of Pisces. Write with emotion and skip the cute tricks. Five hours later Saturn goes stationary retrograde, yes, in Scorpio. How much Saturn in Scorpio can we take? (answer: as much as we get). Be self-critical, sure, but don’t spend the next five months hammering yourself.

Tue Feb 19 the Moon is in Gemini all day. It’s a Mars day, with energy and motivation. What are you doing with it?

Wed Feb 20 the Moon is in Cancer. Even if you don’t work at home, your thoughts may trend that way. Late that night, the Sun conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. Consider poetry, music, maybe a movie you’ve been saving to watch until now.

Fri Feb 22 the Moon enters Leo but there are no exact aspects going on. Why include this day? Because it’s the day before Mercury goes retrograde for the first time this year. It’s a long retrograde period, too, twenty-three days. Prepare well. Heads Up.

Sat Feb 23 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury goes retrograde at 19Pis. Brace yourself for an extra daily dose of cloudy thinking, crossed wires, and muddled communication. Starting with the Moon in Leo may help us grin and bear it, maybe even laugh at some of the worst of it. Slow down, remember the little stuff, and give yourself and others a second or third chance.

Mon Feb 25 is the Full Moon at 07Vir. This can help us remember the little stuff and perhaps be more helpful to others. When doing critiques, nitpick less and don’t dwell on the typos. Six hours later, Venus moves out of Aquarius and enters the sign of Pisces. You may feel the heart warming up and threatening to float away, and on the day of the romantic full Moon plus the Moon’s day of the week. This is great writing energy.

Tue Feb 26 the Moon is in Virgo when Mercury retrograde conjuncts Mars. Yes, we had a Mercury-Mars conjunction before, on Feb 08. With all this Mercury-Mars energy, we should be able to get something done. It’s a good day to edit something you forgot existed. Or, perhaps briefly revisit that story or novel that’s been hiding in the sock drawer. Even if you change nothing, it can refresh your memory. Having a good Mercury retrograde yet?

Wed Feb 27 the Moon is in Libra almost all day. Enjoy it, and be productive. Wear some favorite comfortable garment or jewelry while working. Luck is a real thing and the world doesn’t always need to know when you’re wearing your lucky writing underwear.

Thu Feb 28 the Moon is void of course in Libra when Venus conjuncts Neptune in Pisces.  Neptune is said to be the higher vibration of Venus, so that makes this a great day for art, and I mean ART. Music, writing, all of it. Even if you’re working on the most mundane, dull, dry, or fizzy poppy stuff, fiction or non-fiction, there are still elements of art that string those words together, and you are the one who makes it happen. Reward yourself for a job well done, even if no one else in all time and space sees it. You still did it, and it’s yours.

It’s that kind of month, heavy and powerful but also deep and sweet. Everything may seem hopelessly twisted and knotted up, frustrated and frustrating, sort of like the two junk drawers in my desk. Still, I can lay hands on the scissors or tape when they’re needed. It’s a month of focus on the big things and still insistence on the little things being right. We can handle it. We’ve done it all before. It’s also a month of grim persistence and emotional vulnerability. It does not have to lead to madness. Think wild but not crazy. It’s a short month. Do something outrageously grand with it! There’s no one to stop you, but you.  Heads up!

Heads Up!
