Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

August 2017

All times are PDT.

August, full of Sun, Mars, and eclipses. How hot is that? We shall see. The month starts on a Tuesday, the day of the week associated with Mars. Now how can that be a coincidence? Not. And, let’s toss in a Mercury retrograde while we’re at it. Ready or not, here August comes!

Tue Aug 01 the Moon starts off in Scorpio but moves into fiery but more friendly Sagittarius in the early morning. The Moon trines Mars at 9:30 pm. Get your list in order, and then blast through it. A short list is fine.

Wed Aug 02 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. It could be a lunch appointment with your agent or your critique group. It could be a “get that ms in the mail” (which probably means email) day. Uranus goes stationary retrograde today, still in Aries. What else is new? Uranus is retrograde five out of twelve months this year, starting now through the end of the year. Sometimes life is a bit less unpredictable but it can be hard to tell.

Thu Aug 03 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius shortly after midnight. It’s nice to have some discipline to your day and work schedule.

Fri Aug 04 the Moon is in Capricorn when Jupiter perfects its square with Pluto. Heads Up. This has been building for a long time, and it will be a long time diffusing, too, if even in our lifetime. Let your enthusiasm for your writing continue to grow, and grow, and grow.

Sat Aug 05 the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. Don’t let anxiety ruin a perfectly good social time. If you get antsy, though, politely skip out, go home, read and or write.

Mon Aug 07 we have the Full Moon at 15 Aqu. Heads Up. Face your work and face the audience that it is preparing to meet. This is also a lunar eclipse. Be on guard for more emotional responses from people. Maintain some objectivity, and remember that it’s all good character research, right?

Wed Aug 09 the Moon is in Pisces all day. The Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces at 4:14 pm. Write your ideal scene, sketch out your ideal plot outline, and don’t fret if you lapse into a daydream in the afternoon. Take notes.

Fri Aug 11 the Moon is in Aries all day. It could be a busy weekend. Venus trines Neptune at 10:17 pm. It could also be a profoundly romantic evening. Play Berlioz. Let someone else play Puccini. The big news is that tomorrow Mercury goes stationary retrograde in Virgo. Heads Up to get prioritized and organized. This includes thought processes as well as all things mechanical and electronic.

Sat Aug 12 the Moon is in Aries all day. At 6:00 pm Mercury goes stationary retrograde in Virgo. Heads Up and make it good. Mercury retro in Virgo is prime editing season on my planet, by the way.

Tue Aug 15 the Moon leaves Taurus and enters Gemini at 7:06 am. Heads Up for intensified creative communicating and networking from now until Thursday morning. You may need to make allowances for the Mercury retrograde, but otherwise don’t hold back.

Wed Aug 16 the Moon is in Gemini all day. How is your word count going?

Thu Aug 17 the Moon leaves Gemini and enters Cancer at 9:13 am. Did you get a lot done? Maybe it’s time for a second breakfast.

Fri Aug 18 the Moon conjoins Venus in Cancer. If you’re not in the mood to dress up yourself or your work, consider scrutinizing what could make your work more popular.

Sun Aug 20 the Moon conjoins Mars in Leo. It’s the Sun’s day of the week, by the way. Get passionate about your own stuff and let it shine. It’s also the day before the New Moon, which happens to also be a total solar eclipse that cuts across North America from Oregon to South Carolina. Heads Up. Do you know where your eclipse goggles are? Heads Up for all the usual reasons, plus some.

Mon Aug 21 we have the New Moon at 28 Leo at 11:30 am. Heads Up for conspicuous and hopefully glorious changes in the world, literary and otherwise. If you are in the US and can witness this as a total eclipse, do it! Don’t miss the experience of a lifetime. Can you say bucket list? It’s that spectacular. If not in the zone of totality, if you can observe it locally, protect your eyes. Even a tiny bit of the Sun’s photosphere is bright enough to damage your vision. The Moon kindly goes void of course immediately after. At 1:25 pm the Moon enters cooler, calmer, and probably unfazed Virgo. The royal star Regulus has progressed into the beginning of Virgo (for us tropical zodiac types). Take some time and write your powerful heroine scene now. Also, today is the last day that the Sun spends in flamboyant Leo. Tomorrow the world may seem a bit slower and more mundane if not saner. We can hope.

Tue Aug 22 the Moon conjoins Mercury retrograde in Virgo. Heads Up in the best of ways. Do you have enough red pen and pencils? At 3:20 pm the Sun exits Leo and enters Virgo. Heads Up for a double dose of practicality if not pragmatism. Don’t waste a drop of it.

Wed Aug 23 the Moon is in Virgo for most of the day. You can get a lot done, even if most of it is bits and pieces. At 6:05 pm the Moon enters agreeable Libra. It may be less easy to get much work done in the evening. We’ve had a month of Wednesdays with the Moon mostly in the mutable signs. It’s a good thing that people like to read about people, isn’t it?

Fri Aug 25 the Moon is in Libra when Saturn goes stationary direct. Saturn has been retrograde since April 5, and a retrograde Saturn can sometimes be a kinder, gentler Saturn so it’s easy to lapse and forget to notice. Nonetheless, Saturn is still a guest in the house of Jupiter so all its saturnine claws are not out after it has gone direct. Heads Up anyway. Also at 9:30 pm Venus changes signs, leaving tender-hearted Cancer and entering glamorous Leo. Now’s the time to punch up your work.

Sat Aug 26 the Moon is in Scorpio when the Sun conjoins Mercury retrograde in Virgo. Heads Up. If you were organized before, it may take a bit more effort to stay that way now. Don’t fret if it isn’t easy.

Wed Aug 31 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. The month goes out on a fiery, mutable note. It’s a good day to submit work and to get good news back from publishers and agents.

To say that changes are in the air is a gross understatement. We are swimming in change. We are saturated in big change. Let these changes take you in the direction that you want to go. The Sun and Mars provide the integrity, self-motivation, spark, and passion to start and not stop until you decide that it is time.

To end the month in Virgo is a great blessing. We can screw our heads back on straight and get back to basics. We can tend to daily matters with skill and precision. The month ends with Mercury retrograde, and this can get us to downshift out of manic city and work at our own pace.

No matter what is happening in the outside world, we control the horizontal and vertical of our own world. Of course we need to interface the two worlds from time to time, but we have some control over that, too.

Hang on, and Heads Up!

Happy Spring!

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

April 2017

All times are PDT.

It’s April, and no fooling! The month starts on a Saturday, Saturn’s day of the week, so skip the fooling around and get a jump on your work load and on whatever works for you.

Sat Apr 01 the Moon is in Gemini, and trine Jupiter retrograde. Write as much as you can. Or, get out and socialize as much as you can and gather material.

Sun Apr 02 the Moon in Gemini opposes Saturn at 7:43 am and goes void of course until 11:27 am when the Moon enters Cancer. Lunch time! Did you get a lot done? At 5:25 pm Venus retrograde changes signs and enters Pisces by the back door. Heads Up, especially for romance writers.

Wed Apr 5 the Moon is in Leo all day. Sit up straight and know that what you write really rocks. Saturn goes retrograde at 10:06 pm. Heads Up. It may be a bit harder to resist interruptions.

Fri Apr 7 the Moon is in Virgo when the Sun opposes Jupiter retrograde. Jupiter is at its brightest and will be high in the night sky around 1 am. Go out and look if you can. Heads Up. Take a good look at how lucky you really are, and appreciate it all. Submit work today, and keep in touch with agents, editors, and your writing critique buddies.

Sat Apr 8 the Moon is in Virgo all day. The big news is, tomorrow starts the second Mercury retrograde period of the year. Heads Up. Keep calm and get organized and systematic. Do you know where your phone is? Good.

Sun Apr 9 the Moon is in Libra when Mercury goes stationary retrograde at 4 Tau. Heads Up. Stay organized at work, keep your home finances organized, drive safely, and you’re good. If this retrograde slows down your productivity, don’t fret. The retrograde will end in Aries and you’ll more than make up for it.

Mon Apr 10 the Moon conjoins Jupiter retrograde at 3:58 pm. You should have luck contacting people now. We have the Full Moon at 21 Lib later at 11:08 pm. It’s a month to love and be loved. Love what you’re working on, too. Passover begins.

Wed Apr 12 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. Nothing can discourage you from your work, except perhaps yourself. Just do it and don’t look back.

Thu Apr 13 the Moon is in Scorpio when the Sun conjoins Uranus in in Aries at 10:30 pm. Heads Up. Write surprising events that have serious consequences.

Sat Apr 15 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. The big news is that Venus goes stationary direct at 26 Pis at 3:18 am. Heads Up. Write something secret and show it to no one. From April 15 through April 19 we have “only” three planets retrograde. Can you tell the difference? (continue reading…)

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

March 2017

times are PST through March 11. From March 12 on, times are PDT.

March on! We start on a Wednesday, Mercury’s day of the week, and we all know how hard it is for Mercury to sit still for long. Up and at ’em!

Wed Mar 01 the Moon is in Aries all day. The very busy Moon squares Pluto in the wee hours. A rocky dream could knock free a sticking point in a story. The Moon conjoins Uranus at 10:27 am and then opposes Jupiter at 10:43 am. Heads Up. Surprises rarely make everybody happy. The Moon next conjoins Mars at 1:48 pm. Heads Up. Don’t get frustrated. Get working. The Moon then trines Saturn and goes void of course at 6:18 pm. Have a calmer, better organized evening. In case you haven’t had enough stimulation for one day, the Sun conjoins Neptune in Pisces at 6:44 pm. Heads Up. Very few things are going to be what they seem. What else is new? (continue reading…)

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

February 2017

all times PST

February! We’re ripping through this year. Are you writing as fast? Do it. There’s a lot going on, and a lot to say. We start with the Moon at the start of the Zodiac, in Aries. It’s a Wednesday, Mercury’s day of the week, so we can craft a month of sharp, fiery wit, if we so choose.

Wed Feb 01 the Moon is in Aries all day. Mercury is sextile Chiron. Don’t be afraid to write about what hurts. Don’t be afraid at all. You don’t have to show it to anyone.

Thu Feb 02 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Be bold and surprise yourself. Look at something from a radically different angle. A few hours later Mercury squares Jupiter. If you think you’ve gone overboard, so what? That’s what editing is all about. (continue reading…)

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

January 2017

(all times are PST)

Happy New Year! Another year bites the dust, We can make this new one as happy and productive a year as we want and need. The year starts on a Sunday, the Sun’s day of the week. So long as we remember to shine, every day, we can reach out and touch gold. Be the best we can be. Write the best and truest that we can write. That’s the Sun for you.

Sun Jan 01 the Moon is Aquarius all day. Think big, observe more of the big picture, and prepare for a bigger audience. The Moon makes a trine with Jupiter in the morning. Being lucky wants to be easy. Late that night, the Moon conjoins Venus. Prepare to be popular and in demand.

Mon Jan 02 the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. Sweet dreams, sleeping or waking. Two and a half hours later the Moon conjoins Mars. Now here’s motivation. Shortly before midnight, Venus changes signs, leaves Aquarius and enters Pisces. Feel better connected to your work.

Wed Jan 04 the Moon is in Pisces when Mercury retrograde changes signs, slipping out of Capricorn and back into Sagittarius. Keep working hard anyway. There’s no rush.

Thu Jan 05 the Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries. Spot, or invent, a plot twist. Two hours later the Moon makes an opposition to Jupiter. If it’s not working out to your pleasure, pull back a little.

Fri Jan 06 the Moon is in Taurus when the Sun conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. Heads Up. Don’t let anything sudden throw you off balance. Do solid work, and feel secure in your writers’ circle or other literary support group.

Sun Jan 08 the Moon is in Taurus when Mercury goes stationary direct. Heads Up in the best of ways. That wasn’t so bad, was it? And you got a lot of work done. Furthermore, at 2:06 pm the Moon departs from Taurus and enters Gemini. It’s a great start to a Mercurial writing/reading/networking bash that lasts into Tuesday afternoon. It’s another bright Heads Up!

Tue Jan 10 the Moon is still in Gemini when the Sun squares Uranus. Be flexible and don’t expect a recent surprise fix to solve all your problems. At 1:38 pm the Moon opposes Mercury and then goes void of course until the Moon enters Cancer at 2:49 pm. I consider this an excuse for an early tea time.

Wed Jan 11 the Moon is in Cancer all day. Resist constant snacking, although the random work break is perfectly fine.

Thu Jan 12 we have the Full Moon at 22Can. Heads Up. You know what you love to do, and where to do it, and for whom you do it. Hold those thoughts. Two and a half hours later Mercury changes signs and reenters Capricorn. If work ethic has been fading, this will revive it. (continue reading…)

October 2016

October starts on a Saturday with the Moon in Libra. Weekends with the Sun in Libra can all be party time, and there’s no bigger party than the one you write. Go out and have some fun, too, okay?

Mon Oct 03 the Moon conjoins Venus in Scorpio. Polish something that you really care about. It doesn’t matter if no one else ever gets to see it.

Wed Oct 05 the Moon enters Sagittarius at 1:26 am. Dream big. Write big. Edit later.

Thu Oct 06 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. Just like yesterday, dream and work big, but now with a bit more control. Skip any critique and edit later.

Fri Oct 07 the Moon is still in Sagittarius when Mercury changes signs, finally leaving Virgo and entering Libra. Thoughts turn to social interactions, fairness and fun, and how to cleverly keep the peace. Now there are some big literary themes. (continue reading…)

September 2016

(all times are PDT)

Like New Moons? Like Solar Eclipses? Happy September 1! Start the month with a fresh approach, and a fresh feeling. Autumn is not that far off. And remember, Mercury is retrograde.

Thu Sep 01 is the New Moon and Solar Eclipse at 9 Vir. Heads Up. It’s pretty much opposed Neptune, too. Be safe and work on the small important stuff first. In the evening the Sun squares Saturn. Don’t judge what you wrote today. You’ll like it better tomorrow.

Fri Sep 02 the Sun makes an opposition to Neptune at 9:38 am. Let the dreamy fog dissolve and see things more clearly. At 10:18 am Mercury retrograde conjoins Jupiter in Virgo. Trust your first impression, write fast, and edit later. At 3:00 pm the Moon conjoins Mercury, and at 3:13 pm the Moon conjoins Jupiter and goes void of course. Write fast, write a lot and don’t worry about how much of it may make the cut. At long last the Moon enters Libra at 5:55 pm. Now go have a pleasant evening.

Sat Sep 03 the Moon conjoins Venus in Libra. Hold your head up high and smile. You’re writing. You don’t even have to tell anybody about it. (continue reading…)

Heads Up! August Astrological Almanac

malibu

(all times are PDT)

August starts on a Monday with the Moon in Cancer until the evening. Feelings are high but they may also be tender. It’s also the day before the New Moon in Leo. Heads Up!

Tue Aug 02 the Moon is very dark in Leo when Mars changes signs, leaves Scorpio and enters Sagittarius. About two hours later is the New Moon at 10 Leo. Things should really brighten up now. Don’t let anything get you down.

Wed Aug 03 the Moon is in Leo all day. Write like the champion you are. In the evening the Moon conjoins Venus in Leo and then goes void of course. Don’t worry about making anything look or sound better. Do that later.

Thu Aug 04 the Moon conjoins Mercury in Virgo at 1:43 am. Want to take a closer look at what you did yesterday? Go ahead but don’t be harsh. At night at 9:57 pm the Moon opposes Neptune. You can change your opinion about something but don’t act on it until tomorrow.

Fri Aug 05 the Moon is in Virgo when Venus changes signs and enters Virgo. Aesthetics remain refined but details matter more. Think little pearl buttons, all buttoned down. About twelve hours later the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Virgo and goes void of course. You may not feel that you’re doing enough, but that’s just the big picture talking. Stay on track, do little things, but maybe more of them. (continue reading…)

Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

By Kathy Watts

July 2016

(all times are PDT)

July starts on a Friday (the day of the week for Venus) with the Moon just slipping into super-writer-friendly Gemini. We can spend the whole darn month working and feeling good about everything and everyone. Yes, we can. Only Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto are retrograde now. The other inner planets are all direct. We can let the outer world go spin its wheels as we get on with our inner lives a bit more often.

Fri July 01 the Moon is in Gemini and will be there until early Sunday morning. Be your best mercurial, inventive, clever self and see how much you learn and accomplish. (continue reading…)
