Heads Up!

The Writer’s Astrological Almanac

by Kathy Watts

December 2014

Welcome to the grand finale month of a busy year! December starts on a Monday (the day of the week dedicated to the Moon). The Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries today, letting us use the whole month in the most innovative way we can imagine. Don’t get too wild, but loosen those restraints and run more free. Mars sextiles Saturn today, too, and that may help us to keep it together without backing down. It’s going to be one perky month.

Wed Dec 03 the Moon is in Taurus all day. We’re getting a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in fixed signs. Buckle down, be productive, and be happy.

Thu Dec 04 the Moon is in Taurus all day again. Venus trines Jupiter in the late morning. Be sweet to yourself and steady in your work. The Moon squares Jupiter two hours later. Don’t fret if you had a touch too much fun earlier today. The Sun trines Uranus about an hour later. Some inventive spirit should return. An hour and a half more, Mars changes signs, leaving Capricorn and entering Aquarius. Keep working hard, though, as Saturn rules both signs and Saturn likes to see hard work. Late that night, the Moon opposes Saturn and goes void of course, still in Taurus. Sleep well and be in good shape for tomorrow.

Fri Dec 05 a couple of hours after midnight, the Moon enters Gemini. From now until Sunday morning, we live the lavish mercurial life, writing, reading, communicating, networking, partying and socializing as only Gemini can do. Make the most of it all. Also, Venus should be emerging from the underworld and making her appearance as an evening star. That gloriously bright diamond on the western horizon after sunset may not be a plane. Go out and look. (Writers need some fresh air, too.)

Sat Dec 06 we have the Full Moon at 14Gem. This is the highest in the sky, longest above the horizon full moon of the year. Use it to recharge your love of all things new and wonderful, and let it inspire your work all lunar month long.

Mon Dec 08 the Moon is in Cancer when Mercury makes a conjunction with the Sun. Give the rational mind a short break and just observe. Midday the slow strong Jupiter in Leo goes stationary retrograde. Luck is not so much going underground as it’s intensifying and becoming more subtle. Subtle? Jupiter? In Leo? Just watch.

Wed Dec 10 the Moon is in Leo all day. Write like and for royalty. Morning, Venus changes signs, leaving Sagittarius and entering Capricorn. Beauty acquires a new purpose (and perhaps work ethic).

Thu Dec 11 the Moon conjuncts Jupiter retrograde in Leo. Feel lucky and write big. Submit, too, and do it quick before holiday vacation schedules interfere with your being read.

Fri Dec 12 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury makes a trine with Jupiter retrograde. (Jupiter is going to be retrograde until next April, so I’m going to stop mentioning it.) Find a balance between big and small ideas, short-lived and long-lived audience. At least think about it.

Wed Dec 17 the Moon is in Scorpio all day. Get serious and feel good about it. It’s also the first day of Hanukkah. Light that first candle and illuminate something special.

Sat Dec 20 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. Mercury makes a sextile with Neptune an hour after midnight. Have an inspired dream that’s worth writing about. In the afternoon, Venus is conjunct Pluto, in Capricorn. Charm can have big consequences. That evening, Mars sextiles Uranus. Have some fun, don’t get into too much trouble, and know that you can write about it all later. It’s the day before the New Moon, so heads up in all those little practical ways that keep you safe. It’s also the last day of the year that the Sun spends in the glorious house of Jupiter, also known as the sign of Sagittarius. Tomorrow the world may seem slower, more strict and serious, more deliberate. Heads Up.

Sun Dec 21 the Moon is void of course in the very end of Sagittarius when Uranus goes stationary direct. Don’t let a tiny extra dash of surprise knock you off balance. Eighteen minutes later, the Sun changes signs, leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn. The Sun is now a guest in the house of Saturn. It’s the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Do an ingress chart to get a peek at what the next three months may hold in store for you. The Moon enters Capricorn in the late afternoon; eleven minutes later we have the New Moon at 00Cap. Do work that matters to you and don’t be a slave to someone else’s fashion.

Mon Dec 22 the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Capricorn in the morning. Find practical applications for all that cleverness. In the afternoon, the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. Relax and just keep on keeping on. That night, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Capricorn and goes void of course. This is a lot of Capricorn. Don’t let the holiday obligations grind you down.

Tue Dec 23 the Moon is void of course in Capricorn when Saturn changes signs, leaves Scorpio and moves on to enter Sagittarius. Saturn is now a guest in Jupiter’s house and Saturn is nothing if not a good guest. Saturn will be drifting back and forth between these two signs for a year. Try to be steady in your efforts and not rock too many boats., at least not without a good reason.

Wed Dec 24 the Moon conjuncts Mars in Aquarius. See if you can get anything done before last minute holiday preparations intervene. Late that night, Mercury conjuncts Pluto (yes, in Capricorn). It may feel as though you can see down to the dark bottom of the well. It’s Christmas Eve. Remember how it feels to be a child, if only for a few minutes.

Fri Dec 26 the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. Many dreams and wishes have already been fulfilled. Later in the evening, the Sun sextiles Neptune. (Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces, btw). It’s Kwanzaa. It’s Boxing Day. It’s St. Stephen’s Day (when I traditionally blast my copy of the Grateful Dead’s Two From the Vault).

Sun Dec 28 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. We started the month with this, too. It looks like we have some stellar assistance if we want to invent a fantastic coming year. Be willing to surprise yourself (you’re already more than able).

It’s a firebrand of a month that concludes an incandescent year. Some fires we do not want put out. Are you writing about them? Are your passions shining through everybody else’s smoke so that what you care about can be clearly seen?

With Saturn fluctuating between Scorpio and Sagittarius for the next several months, we will be very much on our own. We need to be on our best behavior and work with all the integrity we have or wish to develop. Our work is the realm in which we best express ourselves. It’s what we do. We write. We create. We share. We do it all the time. We can do it better, of course, and do more of it. And we’re constantly working on it. It supports us in more ways than one.

Be driven, and don’t let the work or the world drive you. We are the ones in control of all these thoughts, ideas, words. Be brilliant, bold, beautiful, and create abundantly.

Look out 2015, here we come! Heads Up!
